Why Do Signs from Spirit Sometimes Stop?

It happens all the time.

At first, the signs seem to be everywhere.

Feathers appear in impossible places.

Songs come on the radio at exactly the right moment.

You keep noticing the same number.

You smell their perfume.

You dream about them.

You feel them close.

And then...

Nothing.

The signs stop.

People often ask me if they've done something wrong.

"Have I lost my connection?"

"Have my loved ones gone away?"

"Why have the signs stopped?"

My answer is probably not what you'd expect.

I don't think they've stopped because Spirit have left you.

I wonder if they've stopped because Spirit trust you.

Why do we look for signs from Spirit?

Usually because we're hurting.

We've lost someone we love.

We're frightened.

We need reassurance.

We need to know they're still there.

Signs can be incredibly comforting during those early days.

A feather at exactly the right moment.

A robin that appears just when you're crying.

A favourite song playing when you least expect it.

Whether those moments are created by Spirit or simply become meaningful because of the love we carry, they can bring enormous comfort.

Sometimes, that's exactly what we need.

Are signs meant to last forever?

I'm not convinced they are.

Imagine teaching a child to ride a bike.

At first, you hold on tightly.

You steady them.

You reassure them.

You run alongside them.

Then, eventually...

You let go.

Not because you want them to fall.

Because you know they're ready.

I sometimes wonder if Spirit work in a similar way.

What if Spirit are encouraging you to trust?

When you've had enough reassurance...

Enough evidence...

Enough little nudges...

Perhaps there comes a point where Spirit quietly step back.

Not because they've disappeared.

Because they want you to begin trusting what you already know.

After all, if every single day required another feather...

Another robin...

Another perfectly timed song...

Would you ever reach the point where you genuinely believed they were still with you?

Or would you become dependent on the next sign?

Can we become dependent on signs?

I think we can.

Not intentionally.

Not because we're doing anything wrong.

Simply because grief makes us long for certainty.

We tell ourselves,

"If I just see one more sign, I'll be okay."

Then tomorrow arrives.

And we need another one.

Before we know it, we've accidentally placed our peace of mind into something outside ourselves.

I don't think that's what Spirit want.

What happens when the signs stop?

Often...

Nothing has changed except your awareness.

Your loved ones haven't abandoned you.

Love hasn't disappeared.

The connection hasn't been broken.

The reassurance has simply done its job.

Now comes the next stage.

Learning to carry that certainty without needing constant reminders.

Trust isn't built on endless proof

This is something mediumship has taught me.

If I needed a spectacular experience every single day to believe in Spirit...

I don't think I'd ever feel secure.

At some point, evidence has to become trust.

That's true in relationships too.

You don't ask someone who loves you to prove it every morning.

Eventually, you know.

Perhaps Spirit are inviting us into that same kind of relationship.

Could the signs still be there?

Of course.

Perhaps you've simply stopped noticing them.

Perhaps they're quieter now.

Perhaps they arrive differently.

Or perhaps you no longer need them in the same way.

None of those possibilities mean you're doing anything wrong.

Don't measure your connection by miraculous moments

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is believing we're only connected to Spirit when something extraordinary happens.

Sometimes Spirit feel closest during completely ordinary moments.

Making a cup of tea.

Walking the dog.

Laughing with your family.

Watching the sunset.

Not because something supernatural happened.

Because love quietly exists there too.

What if the greatest sign is the life you're living?

Here's a thought I come back to often.

Perhaps the greatest sign your loved ones could ever give you...

Is the confidence to stop needing signs altogether.

To wake up knowing they're still with you.

To smile when you think of them instead of immediately searching for proof.

To live your life with the quiet certainty that love didn't end.

Maybe that's what all those feathers, robins and songs were leading towards.

Not dependence.

Trust.

Spirit don't disappear when the signs do

If the signs have become quieter recently...

Please don't panic.

Don't assume you've done something wrong.

Don't convince yourself your loved one has left.

Sometimes the silence isn't absence.

Sometimes it's confidence.

The confidence Spirit have in you.

The confidence that you've reached the point where you no longer need constant reassurance.

And perhaps that's one of the greatest acts of love they could ever offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why have the signs from Spirit stopped?

In my experience, it doesn't necessarily mean anything has gone wrong. Many people notice lots of signs after a bereavement and then find they become less frequent over time. I don't believe this means your loved one has left you. Sometimes it simply reflects that you've reached a point where Spirit are encouraging you to trust the connection rather than rely on constant reassurance.

Do our loved ones stop sending signs?

I don't believe our loved ones stop loving us or leave us. Whether they send fewer signs or whether we simply become less aware of them is impossible to know for certain. What I do know is that a quieter experience doesn't automatically mean a weaker connection.

Can you become dependent on signs from Spirit?

I think it's possible. After a loss, signs can bring enormous comfort, but if we begin feeling that we can only get through the day after seeing a feather, a robin or a particular number, we may have unintentionally become reliant on external reassurance. In my opinion, Spirit want to help us build trust, not dependency.

Have I done something wrong if I don't receive signs anymore?

No. I don't believe the absence of signs is a punishment or evidence that you've lost your spiritual connection. Our relationship with Spirit naturally evolves over time, and periods of quietness can be just as meaningful as periods filled with obvious experiences.

Why did I receive so many signs at first?

The early stages of grief are often when people feel the greatest need for reassurance. Whether those signs come directly from Spirit or become meaningful because of our heightened awareness, they can provide comfort during an incredibly difficult time. As grief changes, our need for that reassurance often changes too.

Are feathers, robins and repeated numbers really signs from Spirit?

They certainly can be meaningful experiences for many people. Personally, I think it's important not to become overly attached to one particular type of sign. Spirit communicate in many different ways, and sometimes the greatest comfort comes not from extraordinary moments but from a quiet inner knowing that your loved one is still with you.

How can I stay connected to my loved ones without signs?

Rather than constantly looking for external proof, spend time talking to your loved one, remembering them, noticing how they've shaped your life and trusting the relationship you continue to have with them. Love doesn't disappear simply because the signs become quieter.

What if I desperately want another sign?

That's a completely understandable feeling, especially after a bereavement. Instead of asking yourself why the signs have stopped, it may be helpful to ask what they gave you when they were there. If they brought reassurance that your loved one still exists, perhaps you can begin trusting that reassurance even when there isn't a feather or a song to remind you.

Does silence from Spirit mean they've gone?

I don't believe so. Silence isn't always absence. Sometimes it's simply a different phase of your relationship with Spirit. Just as relationships with people change and deepen over time, our relationship with our loved ones in Spirit can evolve too. A quieter connection doesn't mean a weaker one.
