Did that event actually make you any money?

A free spreadsheet to find out what your demonstrations, fairs, workshops and retreats really cost you. Your time included.

I once came home from a big expo eight grand down. Before that, I’d had demonstrations I thought had gone brilliantly, until I sat down and did the sums properly and realised I’d earned less than minimum wage for the privilege.

Most of us only ever look at the money in and the money out. We forget the hours we spent promoting it, setting up, packing down and lying on the sofa recovering afterwards. We forget the friends who helped us for free. And we tell ourselves it was worth it because we got our name out there.

So I made the spreadsheet I wish I’d had years ago. It’s the one I talk you through in my book, Your Spiritual Business, and it’s yours for free.

WHAT’S INSIDE

A worked example, so you can see how it all fits together before you start.
A blank event sheet for you to fill in.
Space for every cost, from the venue and the stand to the petrol, the parking and the three pound Twix.
Your own hours, including prep, travel and recovery, worked out at minimum wage.
Your helpers’ hours, at minimum wage too, even if they gave their time for free.
Any stock you’ve got left over, so you know what’s a loss and what’s sitting in a box in your office.
A section to add any sales that came directly from the event, for up to three months afterwards.
Two honest questions to answer at the end.

When you’re done, it shows you four numbers. What you made in cash. What you really made once your time and your helpers are counted. What you made once your leftover stock is taken into account. And what each person through the door actually cost you.

HOW TO USE IT

Fill in the yellow boxes. The green boxes work everything out for you.

Do it the day after your event, while it’s fresh, and be honest with yourself. Nobody else needs to see it.

Then keep it. Every time a booking comes in that you can directly link to that event, add it to the sales section. Directly linked, mind. Not somebody who might have heard of you there once.

It works in Excel and Google Sheets.

A QUICK NOTE ON MINIMUM WAGE

The example uses the UK minimum wage at the time of writing. It changes every April, so check the current rate on gov.uk and pop it in. If you’re outside the UK, use your local minimum wage instead.

The Event Reality Check comes from Your Spiritual Business, my Mediumship Matters Mini Guide about the good, the bad and the ugly of running a spiritual business. It covers pricing, social media, fairs and expos, boundaries, and the real numbers behind Spirit Social.

FAQS

Who is the Event Reality Check for?

Mediums, psychics, healers, card readers and anybody running spiritual events, from village hall demonstrations to big expos and retreats.

Is it really free?

Yes. I want to help you.

Why should I count my own time at minimum wage?

Because if you don’t, every event looks like a success. Counting your time, and your helpers’ time, shows you what you really earned per hour, and whether it was worth it.

What counts as a directly linked sale?

A booking or purchase you know came from that event. For example, somebody who met you there and booked a reading, or who bought a course with the code you gave out on the night.

Can I use it for fairs and expos as well as demonstrations?

Yes. It works for any event where you pay to be there, run it yourself or give your time.
