Overcoming
Doubt In Mediumship
Mediumship Matters Mini Guide #6

An honest, practical guide to working with doubt, fear and imposter syndrome in mediumship

Books (6).jpg

Overcoming Doubt in Mediumship is a practical guide by evidential medium Hannah Macintyre, and the sixth book in the Mediumship Matters Mini Guides. It looks at the places doubt likes to hide in mediumship development, what it’s actually telling you, and how to build confidence that comes from experience rather than pretending.

What if doubt never fully goes away?

Hannah has been working as a medium for years, and she’ll tell you straight: she still has doubt. The voice in her head even has a name. It’s Celeste, and she has opinions.

This isn’t a book by someone who has transcended doubt and now floats serenely above it. As Hannah says, “I’m not sure that person exists, and if they do, I’m not sure I’d want to learn from them.”

Instead, it’s the book she needed when she was developing. It tells you the wobbles are normal, a bad reading doesn’t mean you’ve lost it, and the voice telling you that you can’t do this is not, in fact, Spirit.

What This Book Is About

Doubt comes up in almost every class Hannah teaches. It wears different outfits. Sometimes it looks like fear of getting a no. Sometimes it looks like chasing names, waiting to feel ready, or comparing yourself to someone’s highlight reel. Underneath, it’s usually the same thing: a very human brain trying to protect you from looking like an idiot.

Overcoming Doubt in Mediumship doesn’t promise to get rid of your doubt. Each chapter looks at a different place where doubt hides. These include the tipping point from reaching to receiving, fear and nerves, validation addiction and the name hunt, sitter mismatch, trusting your guides, and telling psychic from mediumship. The book also covers practice, the words you use, keeping your power, and why one day you’re on fire and the next you’re a potato.

It shows you how to understand what your doubt is telling you, when to listen and when to carry on anyway.

What You Will Learn

Inside this book, you will discover:

  • Why doubt isn’t a reliable measure of your ability, and how it keeps moving the goalposts

  • How to treat doubt as data: when it’s pointing to something useful, and when it’s just noise

  • The tipping point: how to move from reaching for information to receiving it

  • Why fear never fully leaves, and how to work while you’re scared

  • Validation addiction: what happens when the hunt for names and proof starts killing the link

  • What to do when the sitter wants Mum and you’ve got Nan

  • Why your guides may sound like you, and how to trust them anyway

  • How not knowing whether you’re working psychically or with spirit feeds doubt

  • How to make practice actually work for you, and when you’ve outgrown it

  • How the words you use before and during a reading shape your mediumship

  • How to keep your power with quiet, sceptical or difficult sitters

  • Why your mediumship feels inconsistent, and what consistency really means

A Simpler Way to Understand Doubt

Hannah is passionate about one thing above all: understanding how and why mediumship works is fundamental to your results with it. Without that foundation, doubt has nothing to push against. Every no feels like proof you’re a fraud. Every quiet reading feels like Spirit have abandoned you, and every wobble feels like going backwards.

When you understand what’s actually happening, doubt starts to lose its authority. This book shows you that:

  • feeling incompetent at something new isn’t the same as losing your ability

  • the voice in your head says the same things whether you’re doing mediumship or lifting weights

  • confidence isn’t feeling certain, it’s being willing to work while certainty is absent

  • the first piece of evidence is a building block, not unfinished evidence

As Hannah puts it, bravery in mediumship is “not the absence of fear, just deciding it does not get to run the diary.”

Who This Book Is For

Overcoming Doubt in Mediumship is ideal if you:

  • Constantly wonder whether you’re making it all up

  • Lose your confidence the moment a sitter says no

  • Keep waiting to feel ready before you practise, read for strangers or demonstrate

  • Feel like you’re never getting “enough” evidence, however much you get

  • Compare yourself to other mediums’ highlight reels on social media

  • Have had a bad reading and are quietly wondering whether to give up

  • Are an experienced medium who still wobbles, and wants to know that’s normal

What Is Overcoming Doubt in Mediumship About?

Overcoming Doubt in Mediumship by Hannah Macintyre is Book 6 of the Mediumship Matters Mini Guides, a series of short, practical books on mediumship development. It explores self-doubt, fear and imposter syndrome in mediumship, and how to build confidence through experience. It covers treating doubt as data, the tipping point from reaching to receiving, working with nerves, validation addiction and the pressure to get names, sitter mismatch, trusting spirit guides, psychic versus mediumship, effective practice, mindset and language, keeping your power with difficult sitters, and inconsistency. Written in Hannah’s honest, funny and down-to-earth style, it’s designed for developing and experienced mediums who want to keep working while the doubt is still talking.

About Hannah

Hi, I’m Hannah Macintyre — evidential medium, Amazon bestselling author, podcast host, and spiritual mentor. For over a decade, I’ve been supporting people to explore their sensitivity and connection with Spirit in a grounded, accessible, and deeply human way.

I don’t believe mediumship is reserved for a chosen few. I believe it is a natural capacity that many of us carry, often quietly, and that with the right understanding and encouragement, it can be developed with confidence.

My own journey was not instant or dramatic. Like many people, I doubted what I was receiving and assumed I needed certainty before I could trust it. What I learned is that mediumship is not about getting everything right. It is about listening, responding, and allowing communication with Spirit to unfold.

I still have doubt. I just don’t let it run the diary anymore, and I want the same for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Doubt in Mediumship

Is it normal to doubt your mediumship?

Completely. Hannah has been working for years and still has doubt. What changes with experience isn’t whether the voice speaks, but how much authority you give it. Early on, doubt asks whether you can connect at all. Later it asks whether you can do it well. It’s a normal part of doing something that matters.

How do I know if I’m making it up?

Often you won’t know in the moment, and that’s okay. Confidence isn’t feeling certain. It’s being willing to say what you perceive and learn from what happens. Over time, you build a body of experience showing that when you say what you genuinely receive, useful things happen.

Why does understanding how mediumship works help with doubt?

Because doubt feeds on confusion. If you don’t understand why a link went quiet, why a sitter said no, or why your guide sounds like you, every wobble feels like proof you’re failing. When you understand the mechanics, you can see what’s actually happening, adjust, and keep going.

Why do I lose confidence when a sitter says no?

Because a no can feel like a verdict on your whole ability, when it’s really just information about one piece. Sometimes you used the wrong word, sometimes the sitter can’t place it yet, and sometimes you were simply wrong. The book shows you how to stay steady without collapsing or arguing.

Do I need to get names to be a good medium?

No. Names can be brilliant evidence, but they’re not the measure of good mediumship. Hannah warns against “validation addiction”, where the hunt for ever more impressive evidence stops being about the sitter and starts being about reassuring yourself.

Why is my mediumship so inconsistent?

Because there are lots of variables: the sitter, your state, tiredness, pressure, and what you’re currently learning. One brilliant reading doesn’t mean you’ve permanently levelled up, and one awful reading doesn’t mean you’ve lost it. Real consistency is about how you respond to whatever turns up.

Keep Going

Doubt is probably not going anywhere. But a difficult reading doesn’t erase the good ones. A no doesn’t erase the communicator. Nerves don’t erase your ability.

You’re not trying to become fearless. You’re trying to become familiar with yourself.

So if you still doubt yourself after reading this, you probably haven’t missed the point. You’re probably just a medium.

Keep going.
