It's one of the biggest questions I'm asked.

Can mediumship heal grief?

I understand why people ask it.

When someone you love dies, the pain can feel unbearable. If there's even the slightest possibility that hearing from them again could make that pain disappear, of course you'd want to explore it.

I would too.

But after thousands of evidential readings, my answer is probably not what you'd expect.

No.

Mediumship doesn't heal grief.

At least, not in the way many people hope it will.

What can a mediumship reading do?

A beautiful evidential reading can do something extraordinary.

It can replace uncertainty with reassurance.

One of the greatest gifts mediumship offers is knowing that your loved one still exists.

They're safe.

They're still themselves.

The love hasn't ended.

For many people, that's life-changing.

It removes the fear that their loved one has disappeared forever.

It eases the worry that they suffered.

It answers questions that have been keeping them awake at night.

Those are incredible gifts.

But they're different from healing grief.

Why do we still miss people after a reading?

Because grief isn't caused by uncertainty.

It's caused by love.

You don't miss someone because you think they've ceased to exist.

You miss them because you can't hug them.

You can't ring them.

You can't hear them laugh across the room.

You can't make new memories together in the way you once did.

No medium can change that.

Nor should they promise to.

Grief isn't something to fix

I sometimes worry that we treat grief as though it's a problem that needs solving.

It isn't.

It's a completely natural response to loving someone deeply.

If we never grieved, what would that say about the love we shared?

The goal isn't to stop grieving.

The goal is to learn how to carry that love differently.

Over time, grief changes shape.

It rarely disappears.

But it becomes something we learn to live alongside.

The reading that changed my understanding of grief

Years ago, during lockdown, I gave a reading to a lady whose husband had died suddenly.

The evidence flowed beautifully.

His personality came through.

His love came through.

His reassurance came through.

I finished the reading feeling quietly pleased.

Then she looked at me and said something I'll never forget.

"That's wonderful. I know he's okay... but what about me?"

It stopped me in my tracks.

Until that moment, I'd been unconsciously believing that if I gave a good enough reading, I'd somehow fix the grief.

I couldn't.

Because her grief wasn't about whether he existed.

It was about waking up alone the next morning.

Mediumship couldn't change that reality.

And recognising that made me a better medium.

What mediumship can never replace

There are some things only life can do.

Time.

Support.

Friendship.

Counselling.

Family.

Slowly rebuilding routines.

Finding reasons to smile again without feeling guilty.

None of those things can be replaced by another reading.

As mediums, we need to be honest about that.

Our work is incredibly important.

But it also has limits.

Should you book another reading?

Sometimes, yes.

Sometimes another reading is exactly what someone needs.

Perhaps years have passed.

Perhaps another loved one has passed into Spirit.

Perhaps you've reached a new chapter in your life.

But if you're booking because you're hoping one more reading will finally remove the pain...

I'd gently encourage you to pause.

Ask yourself what you're really searching for.

Sometimes the answer isn't another evidential reading.

Sometimes it's permission to grieve.

Ethical mediumship means knowing your role

I think one of the biggest responsibilities we have as mediums is recognising where our work ends.

We're not grief counsellors.

We're not therapists.

We're not here to convince someone they should never feel sad again.

We're here to provide evidence that love continues.

To bring comfort.

To offer reassurance.

To remind people that death isn't the end.

That's sacred enough.

We don't need to promise more than that.

Healing doesn't mean forgetting

One of the things I wish more people understood is that healing doesn't mean leaving your loved one behind.

It doesn't mean forgetting them.

Or talking about them less.

Or pretending you're over it.

Healing simply means finding a way to carry them with you without grief overshadowing every part of your life.

It's learning that you can miss someone and still laugh.

You can cry and still create new memories.

You can love someone who has died while continuing to love the people who are still here.

Those things aren't disloyal.

They're life.

The greatest reassurance

After thousands of readings, I can tell you what Spirit seem to want more than anything.

They want the people they love to live.

Not just exist.

Live.

To travel.

To laugh.

To celebrate birthdays.

To eat the chocolate cake.

To fall in love again if that's right for them.

To keep making memories.

I've never had a loved one in Spirit tell me they wanted someone to stay frozen in grief.

Quite the opposite.

Again and again, the message is,

"Please don't stop living because I died."

Can mediumship help grief?

Yes.

It can bring comfort.

It can bring hope.

It can answer questions.

It can remove fear.

It can remind you that love continues.

Those things are profound.

But grief isn't something that disappears because of one extraordinary conversation.

Grief changes because we slowly learn to weave loss into the story of our lives.

Mediumship can help us begin that journey.

It can't walk it for us.

And perhaps that's exactly as it should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can mediumship heal grief?

In my experience, no. Mediumship can bring enormous comfort, reassurance and peace, but it doesn't remove the pain of missing someone you love. Grief exists because love exists, and no evidential reading can take away the fact that someone is no longer physically here with you.

Can a mediumship reading help with grief?

Yes, it can. A good evidential reading can reassure you that your loved one still exists, that they're safe and that your relationship with them hasn't ended. For many people, that removes fear and uncertainty, which can be a profoundly important part of the grieving journey.

Why do I still feel sad after hearing from my loved one?

Because knowing someone is safe in Spirit isn't the same as having them beside you. You still miss their voice, their hugs, their presence and the life you shared together. Feeling sad after a reading doesn't mean the reading wasn't genuine—it means you're grieving someone you love.

Should I keep booking mediumship readings while I'm grieving?

Only you can answer that, but it's worth asking yourself why you're booking. If you're looking for reassurance after a significant loss, a reading may be incredibly helpful. If you're hoping another reading will finally remove the pain, it may be worth exploring additional support, such as grief counselling, alongside your spiritual beliefs.

What's the difference between mediumship and grief counselling?

Mediumship aims to provide evidence that your loved one continues after physical death and to share messages from Spirit. Grief counselling focuses on helping you process your emotions, adapt to your loss and learn how to move forwards. They're very different forms of support, and one shouldn't be expected to replace the other.

Can a medium tell me how to cope with grief?

A medium may pass on loving guidance or reassurance from your loved one in Spirit, but coping with grief is a deeply personal process. In my opinion, ethical mediums should recognise the limits of their role and encourage people to access additional support if they're struggling with the day-to-day reality of loss.

What do our loved ones in Spirit want for us?

After thousands of readings, the message I hear most often is that they want us to live. They want us to laugh again, make new memories, spend time with the people we love and continue building a meaningful life. They don't expect us to stop missing them, but they rarely want us to stop living because they're no longer physically here.

Is it normal to feel guilty when I start enjoying life again?

Yes, it's incredibly common. Many people feel as though laughing, travelling or creating new memories somehow means they're leaving their loved one behind. I don't believe that's true. Love isn't measured by how long you remain sad. You can carry someone in your heart while still allowing yourself to experience joy.

What is the greatest gift a mediumship reading can give?

For me, it's reassurance. Knowing that your loved one still exists, that love continues and that death isn't the end can be life-changing. From there, the invitation is to honour both your love for them and your own life by continuing to live it as fully as you can.
