Start Here: A Modern Guide to Mediumship, Intuition & Spiritual Connection
This page is a modern guide to mediumship, intuition and spiritual development. Explore common questions, learn how Spirit communicates, and find the best next step for you.
If you’ve found your way here, there’s a good chance you’re feeling called.
Maybe you’ve had experiences you can’t explain.
Maybe your intuition is getting louder.
Maybe you’ve lost someone you love and you’re longing for connection.
Or maybe you’re simply curious, and you want a grounded place to explore without being made to feel silly.
You’re in the right place.
I’m Hannah Macintyre (often known as Hannah Medium), an evidential medium, author and teacher. My work is modern, experience-led and grounded. No rigid belief systems. No fluff. Just real spiritual development for real humans.
Below is a simple guide to the most common questions I’m asked, and the best places to start depending on where you are on the path.
This page is for you if:
-
you’re curious but sceptical
-
you’ve had experiences you can’t explain
-
you want development without religion
-
you want a modern teacher you can trust
What is mediumship (really)?
Mediumship is the ability to connect with spirit and communicate evidence and information that can be recognised by the person you’re reading for.
But here’s what people often miss: mediumship isn’t about being “special”. It’s about awareness, sensitivity and development.
Most people have some degree of intuitive connection. The difference is whether you’ve learned how to work with it safely, consistently, and with trust.
Mediumship also isn’t meant to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s deeply emotional and profound. Sometimes it’s as ordinary as a loved one showing you a teacup, a song, or a dog that mattered. Spirit are wonderfully human like that.

What is spiritual development?
Spiritual development is the process of strengthening your connection with Spirit, your intuition, and yourself.
It’s learning how to:
-
trust what you sense
-
understand how Spirit communicates with you
-
feel safe and grounded while you work
-
develop your gifts ethically and consistently
Spiritual development isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about becoming more you, with less fear and more clarity.
How do I know if I’m intuitive or “psychic”?
If you’ve ever had a gut feeling that turned out to be right, you’re intuitive.
Intuition can show up as:
-
a sudden knowing
-
a strong feeling
-
images in the mind
-
physical sensations
-
dreams
-
signs and synchronicities
The tricky part is that intuition often feels quiet. Almost too simple. It can feel like imagination. That’s why most people talk themselves out of it.
If your intuition feels subtle, that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. It just means it isn’t shouting.

How does Spirit communicate?
Spirit communicate through energy, emotion, impression and imagery. Your mind translates that into words and concepts you understand.
That’s why development matters.
Sometimes you’ll get:
-
a feeling (warmth, grief, humour, pride)
-
an image (a kitchen, a garden, a uniform, a chair)
-
a symbol (a butterfly, a song, a name)
-
a personality (cheeky, calm, strict, gentle)
It isn’t always literal. It’s often essence first, detail second.
And yes, sometimes you’ll doubt it. That’s normal.

Is mediumship safe?
Yes, when it’s approached with grounding, boundaries and a clear ethical foundation.
The biggest issues I see come from people trying to force development, rushing, or copying what they see online.
Safe mediumship is:
-
grounded
-
slow
-
consistent
-
emotionally intelligent
-
led by self-trust and integrity
If you’re sensitive, you don’t need more intensity. You need steadiness.

What’s the difference between psychic and mediumship?
This is one of the most common questions I’m asked, and it’s important.
Psychic work is tuning into a person’s energy, emotions, life situation and potential. It’s information that lives in the person, their life, and their path.
Mediumship is communication with Spirit. It’s connection with the spirit world, bringing through evidence and information from loved ones, guides or the spirit team.
In practice, they often blend. A lot of mediums begin by working psychically and then develop the mediumship frequency more clearly over time.
So if you feel like you’re “only psychic”, don’t downgrade it. It’s often the doorway.
Can anyone learn to be a medium?
In my experience, most people have the capacity for mediumship, because most people are intuitive.
But not everyone chooses to develop it, and not everyone enjoys the process.
Developing mediumship is like developing any skill: you don’t need to be born “special”, but you do need willingness, practice, consistency, and a safe, grounded way of learning.
Some people are naturally more sensitive. Some people need more time. Both can become excellent mediums.
The difference isn’t talent. It’s commitment and trust.

What’s the difference between tarot and oracle cards?
Both tarot and oracle cards are tools for guidance and reflection, but they work differently.
Tarot follows a structured system (usually 78 cards) with traditional meanings, archetypes and a clear framework. It’s like learning a language. Once you understand the structure, you can read with a lot of detail and depth.
Oracle cards are more flexible. Each deck is its own system, with its own artwork and themes. Oracle readings often feel more intuitive and free-flowing, and they can be very accessible, especially for beginners.
Neither is better. It’s about what you resonate with and how you read.
Can mediums predict the future?
This one matters.
A medium can sometimes sense potential timelines or what is likely based on current energy, but the future is not fixed. It shifts depending on free will, choice, and the ever-changing nature of life.
So I don’t teach mediumship as fortune telling.
I teach mediumship as connection, evidence, guidance and spiritual support.
Spirit can highlight patterns. They can nudge. They can warn. They can inspire.
But you are not here to have your life dictated to you by a prediction.
You are here to live it.
If anyone claims they can predict every detail of your future with certainty, I’d personally back away slowly.

What’s the best way to get to know you as a teacher?
I always recommend that you “get to know” your teacher before committing.
The best ways to do that are:
-
listen to my podcast Mediumship Matters
-
read my book You Are A Medium (You Just Don’t Know It Yet)
If you enjoy my tone, approach and honesty there, we’ll probably work very well together.
What if I’m scared I’m making it all up?
Welcome to mediumship.
Doubt is not a sign you’re failing. It’s part of the process. Almost everyone doubts themselves at the beginning. Most people doubt themselves halfway through too.
The difference is not whether doubt appears. It’s whether you learn to keep going anyway.
Spirit rarely arrives with certainty attached. You build trust by practicing, reflecting, and noticing what lands.
You don’t need to be perfect. You need to be present.
A simple starting path (if you’re overwhelmed)
If you’re not sure where to begin, use this:
Step 1: Listen to Mediumship Matters and see if you feel aligned
Step 2: Explore my book You Are A Medium
Step 3: Choose your next step:
-
Want experiences first? Try Spirit Social
-
