Medium, Podcast Host & Spiritual Teacher
Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone become a medium, or do you have to be born with a gift?
Mediumship isn’t a special club you’re either born into or forever locked out of. Despite what some myths suggest, you don’t have to have a psychic grandmother, a mysterious “gift” from birth, or a lightning bolt moment to be a medium.
The truth? Every single one of us is born with the ability to connect with spirit — it’s part of our natural wiring. Some people may notice it earlier, or have experiences that make them more aware of it, but it’s a skill that can be developed, refined, and strengthened just like learning a language or playing an instrument.
The real key to becoming a confident medium isn’t secret techniques or spooky rituals — it’s self-acceptance, trust, and a willingness to practise. When you stop doubting yourself and start listening to that quiet nudge within, you open the door for the spirit world to step in.
How do I know if it’s spirit or just my imagination?
This is the question almost every developing medium wrestles with — and spoiler alert: in the beginning, it will feel like imagination. That’s because spirit communication uses the same part of your mind where imagination lives. It’s not a booming voice from the clouds or a ghost floating at the end of your bed (well… not usually).
Spirit often communicates in gentle, subtle ways — a fleeting thought, a mental picture, a phrase that pops into your head. The difference is in the feel. Spirit impressions tend to “drop in” quickly, unexpectedly, and often with details you wouldn’t consciously make up. They have a certain texture to them — a nudge, a knowing, a shift in your energy.
The trick is to stop dismissing it. Treat every impression as if it is spirit and see where it leads. Over time, you’ll start to notice the difference between your mind chattering away and that quieter, more purposeful voice of spirit.
What’s the difference between psychic and mediumship abilities?
A psychic reading works with your energy — past, present, and the possibilities in your future. It’s about tuning into your thoughts, feelings, and life path, often using tools like cards, crystals, or just pure intuition.
A mediumship reading is different. Instead of focusing on you, I blend my energy with the spirit world to connect with loved ones who have passed. The aim is to bring through clear evidence — details, memories, personality traits — so you know it’s really them, alongside any messages they want to share.
Think of it like this: a psychic reading is about guidance for where you are now and where you’re heading, while a mediumship reading is about reunion, love, and validation from the other side. Both can be powerful — they’re just different doors into the same spiritual house.
How do I start developing my connection with spirit?
First things first — spirit isn’t hiding from you, waiting for you to jump through mystical hoops. Your connection is already there; developing it is about noticing, trusting, and strengthening it.
Start small and make it part of your everyday life. Spend quiet moments tuning in — no pressure, just awareness. Notice the random thoughts, feelings, or images that “drop in” when you weren’t trying. Keep a journal of any signs, synchronicities, or dreams that feel significant.
Meditation and sitting in the power are powerful tools for building your spiritual “muscle.” You can also work with oracle cards, practise sending and receiving intuitive impressions with a friend, or join a development circle.
Most importantly, ditch the perfectionism. Spirit communication is rarely like the movies — it’s more like piecing together a puzzle. The more relaxed, curious, and open you are, the stronger your connection will grow.
What does a good evidential mediumship reading include?
A good evidential mediumship reading should leave you feeling like you’ve just had a catch-up with your loved one in spirit — minus the cup of tea. The focus is on evidence that proves they’re still very much around.
That means you should receive specific details that can’t just be guessed: personality traits, shared memories, physical descriptions, names, places, or even quirky habits and inside jokes. These bits of information build a clear picture of who is communicating.
Once the identity is clear, a reading often moves into meaningful messages — things your loved one wants you to know right now. This could be reassurance, encouragement, or gentle guidance, but it should always be rooted in the evidence that came first.
Above all, it should feel authentic and respectful — no vague “fortune telling,” no fishing for answers, and no leaving you with fear or uncertainty. A good evidential reading uplifts you, validates your connection, and reminds you that love truly does continue beyond this life.
What is The Gateway and who is it for?
The Gateway is my online mediumship school — a friendly, no-fluff space where you can learn, practise, and grow your connection to spirit at your own pace. It’s designed for beginners through to intermediate developing mediums who want real progress without the intimidation or elitism you sometimes find in spiritual circles.
Inside, you’ll find live workshops, practice opportunities, Q&A sessions, a library of on-demand lessons, and a supportive community that actually gets what you’re experiencing. Whether you’re just starting out or already giving readings but want to deepen your evidence and confidence, The Gateway is your safe space to learn, experiment, and find your own style of mediumship.
If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I had a mentor who kept it real” — this is it.
Do I need experience to join your courses or can beginners take part?
You absolutely don’t need any prior experience — beginners are more than welcome! Many of my students start with zero formal training, just a curiosity about spirit and a willingness to give it a go. My courses are designed to meet you where you are, whether you’re brand new or already on your development journey.
I break everything down into clear, practical steps, so you’re never left feeling lost or “not good enough.” If you can bring an open mind, a bit of patience with yourself, and a dash of curiosity, you’ll fit right in.
What’s the difference between The Gateway and 1:1 mentoring?
The Gateway is my monthly membership for beginners to intermediate students — a group learning space with live workshops, practice circles, Q&A sessions, a video library, and a supportive community of fellow developing mediums. It’s perfect if you enjoy learning alongside others, want regular guidance, and like the flexibility of joining sessions that fit your schedule.
1:1 mentoring is completely tailored to you. It’s private, focused, and designed around your unique goals, strengths, and challenges. You get my undivided attention, personal feedback, and a development plan to help you move forward faster.
Think of The Gateway as a friendly group class you can dip in and out of, and 1:1 mentoring as your own personalised spiritual training programme.
What’s Spirit Social and how is it different from Facebook or Instagram?
Spirit Social is my online spiritual community — a safe, ad-free space for seekers, intuitives, and lightworkers to connect, grow, and share without the noise, pressure, and algorithms of mainstream social media.
Unlike Facebook or Instagram, your posts here are seen by all your followers (not hidden unless you “perform” for an algorithm). There’s no endless stream of ads or scam accounts, and we actively protect the community from spam and impersonators.
Inside, you’ll find free mini courses, daily card readings, live events, discussion boards, and genuine connection with people who get the spiritual path you’re on. It’s social media — but for the soul.
Are your courses live or pre-recorded? Can I catch up if I miss a session?
Most of my courses are taught live on Zoom, with recordings available afterwards. So if you miss one, you can always catch up. And you’ll never be behind — spirit works in divine timing, not strict schedules.
Why is my spiritual connection inconsistent? One day it flows, the next it’s gone.
Welcome to the wonderfully frustrating reality of working with spirit! Your connection isn’t “broken” — it’s just influenced by your own energy, emotions, and life circumstances. Some days you’ll feel open, calm, and in the flow; others you might be tired, stressed, or distracted, and that will affect the link.
Spirit is always there, but mediumship is a partnership — you bring your energy, they bring theirs. Learning to work with your natural rhythms, rather than forcing it, is key. Keep showing up, keep practising, and trust that an “off day” doesn’t mean you’ve lost your ability.
Is it normal to feel overwhelmed or emotional when connecting with spirit?
Yes. Spirit touches the heart, and sometimes it brings up old grief, emotion, or even unexpected joy. Tears, tingles, laughter — all signs you’re opening up. Let it happen. It’s part of the journey, and you’re not alone in it.
How do online mediumship courses compare to in-person ones?
Online mediumship courses offer flexibility, accessibility, and the chance to connect with like-minded souls from all over the world. They're perfect for people who need to fit their spiritual development around a busy life, or who don’t live near a trusted teacher.
That said, in-person development circles and retreats can offer deeper energetic connection and immersive experiences — especially when it comes to practising energy work or evidential mediumship in real-time.
I believe both paths have value. That’s why my online mediumship school, The Gateway, includes live sessions, practice circles, and plenty of community interaction — so students don’t feel like they’re on their journey alone.

How can I tell if I have psychic abilities?
You probably do — you just haven’t been taught to recognise them.
Psychic abilities often show up in subtle, everyday ways. If you’ve ever:
-
Had a strong gut feeling that turned out to be right
-
Thought of someone just before they called
-
Walked into a room and immediately sensed the vibe
-
Felt drained around certain people or places
-
Seen repeated signs, symbols, or synchronicities
— then you’re already tuning in to something deeper.
Most people assume psychic abilities are dramatic or spooky, but actually, they’re usually gentle, natural, and often overlooked — especially when we’re taught to dismiss our intuition.
The truth is: psychic connection is part of being human. The real magic is learning how to notice, trust, and work with it.
👉 If you’re curious about developing your abilities, start with my beginner-friendly online course at www.mediumshipmatters.co.uk — you’ll be amazed at what’s already within you.
What should I expect from a mediumship workshop in the UK?
A mediumship workshop in the UK can vary widely depending on who’s running it — but if you attend one with me, here’s what you can expect:
-
A welcoming, no-judgment atmosphere, whether you're brand new or already working with spirit
-
Practical exercises to help you tune in to spirit, trust what you receive, and develop your confidence
-
Guidance on working with your clairs (clairvoyance, clairsentience, etc.) and recognising spirit energy
-
Time for practice and feedback — whether through partner work, mini-readings, or energy sensing
-
A few aha moments, a bit of laughter, and probably some goosebumps along the way
I don’t do performance pressure, gatekeeping, or ego. My workshops are about supporting your connection in a real, grounded way, with lots of encouragement and clear explanations — no fluff, no fakery.

What is mediumship and how does it work?
Mediumship is the ability to connect and communicate with the spirit world. It’s how we receive messages from loved ones who have passed, spirit guides, and even higher consciousness — offering comfort, clarity, and often a bit of cosmic humour.
A medium works by blending their energy with spirit, creating a kind of energetic “meeting point.” From there, spirit can communicate through:
-
Images or visions (clairvoyance)
-
Feelings or physical sensations (clairsentience)
-
Words or thoughts (clairaudience and claircognizance)
Mediumship isn’t about fortune-telling or spooky theatrics — it’s about love, healing, and remembering that life doesn’t end, it just changes form. Every medium works slightly differently, but the goal is always the same: to honour spirit, empower the living, and remind us we’re never truly alone.
In a nutshell:
Mediumship is real, human, and something anyone can explore.
You don’t have to be “gifted” — just open, curious, and willing to develop your connection with integrity and heart.

How do I know if I'm spiritually awakening?
Spiritual awakening can look very different for everyone, but common signs include feeling disconnected from the things that used to matter, questioning your purpose, becoming more emotionally sensitive, and sensing there's “more” out there. You might notice stronger intuition, vivid dreams, energy shifts, or even feeling overwhelmed without knowing why.
It’s often not a blissful lightning bolt moment — more like a slow, sometimes messy unravelling of the old you. You might feel pulled to explore things like mediumship, energy healing, or spirit guides, or start to question societal expectations that no longer fit.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not going mad — you’re waking up.
You’re not alone either. Many people begin their awakening through curiosity about the spirit world or by stumbling across synchronicities they can’t explain. That’s why I created Spirit Social and The Gateway — to give people going through this journey a safe space to grow, learn and connect.
How do online mediumship courses compare to in-person ones?
Honestly? Both can be brilliant — it’s less about the format and more about the teacher and your commitment.
In-person courses give you that in-the-room buzz, instant feedback, and the joy of connecting with like-minded souls face to face (and the biscuits are usually better). Online, though, you get flexibility, no travel costs, and the chance to learn with incredible teachers from anywhere in the world.
Energy isn’t bound by Wi-Fi speed — Spirit doesn’t care if you’re in my lounge in Kent or on your sofa in Australia. If you show up with focus and an open mind, online can be just as powerful.
What should I expect from a mediumship workshop?
Expect to be gently (or sometimes not-so-gently) nudged out of your comfort zone.
We’ll laugh, we’ll probably cry, and you’ll leave with more confidence than you walked in with. I create a safe, supportive space where you can explore your connection to Spirit without pressure to be perfect.
There’ll be teaching, hands-on practice, and practical tips you can take away to keep growing — no crystal ball required (unless you really want one).
How can I tell if I have psychic abilities?
Spoiler alert: you do. Everyone does.
It’s not about being “chosen” — it’s about noticing the subtle nudges, gut feelings, and those odd little coincidences that aren’t actually coincidences at all.
If you’ve ever thought of someone and they suddenly call, had a dream that plays out in real life, or felt a vibe in a room before anyone said a word — that’s your psychic ability already talking to you. You just need to learn its language.
Do I need to be born into a psychic family to be a medium?
Nope. This isn’t the X-Men.
I wasn’t raised with incense swirling in the living room or a deck of tarot cards on the kitchen table — I discovered my abilities later in life, the same way you might. Spirit works with what we’ve got, and our connection isn’t determined by bloodline, it’s shaped by openness, trust, and a bit of practice.
What if I don’t get names in a reading?
Names are great when they come, but they’re not the be-all and end-all of evidence.
A reading is about building a picture so strong the sitter can feel their loved one right there with them. Personality, memories, quirks, phrases, and shared moments are just as important.
I’ve had incredible sittings with zero names mentioned — and the connection was still rock solid. Don’t let one missing detail make you throw out a whole beautiful conversation with Spirit.
Where can I learn psychic abilities online in the UK?
You’re already in the right place.
Through my online school, The Gateway, and my other courses, I teach psychic and mediumship development to people all over the UK (and beyond). Online learning means you can grow your gifts without worrying about travel, parking, or wearing “outside trousers.”
You’ll get live workshops, practice opportunities, and a supportive community that cheers you on every step of the way.
What are the benefits of spiritual development courses?
Think of them as a gym for your soul.
A good course gives you structure, guidance, and safe practice space — plus feedback from someone who’s been where you are. You’ll deepen your connection to Spirit, understand your own energy better, and probably surprise yourself along the way.
And unlike a random scroll through social media, you’re learning in a focused, nurturing environment with people who get it.
Where can I listen to podcasts about mediumship in the UK?
You can start with mine — Mediumship Matters.
It’s free, easy to find wherever you get your podcasts, and blends real talk, teaching, and a bit of sass about all things mediumship and spiritual development. You’ll also hear interviews with other mediums and lightworkers, plus my own experiences — the highs, the lessons, and the “well… that was awkward” moments.
How do I book a spiritual development class in Canterbury?
If you’re local, you’ll find details of my upcoming in-person workshops right here on my website.
Simply click through to the events or courses page, pick what feels right for you, and follow the booking instructions. If you’re not local, my online courses mean you can still join in from your living room — no matter where you live.
What’s the best place to learn psychic abilities online in the UK?
Look for a teacher who’s relatable, down-to-earth, and more focused on building your confidence than telling you they’re “the best.”
In my online school, you’ll learn step-by-step, with bite-sized lessons, live practice, and a friendly community. You’ll also get ongoing support rather than a “see you later” after one class. That consistency is what makes the difference.
Can anyone become a medium, or do you have to be born gifted?
You don’t have to be “born with the gift” or plucked from the womb with a halo over your head to be a medium. Mediumship is a natural human ability — it’s inbuilt, like intuition or empathy. Some people might notice it earlier in life, usually because of family encouragement or life experiences that kept the door open. Others (like me) bumble along thinking they’re just a bit “sensitive” until something clicks.
The real key? Self-awareness and willingness. When you accept who you are, trust your experiences, and work with them instead of second-guessing yourself, your connection with the spirit world deepens. Talent gets you started, but practice, openness, and a healthy dose of self-acceptance are what make the magic happen.
Where can I learn mediumship online in the UK?
If you want to learn mediumship online in the UK, there are plenty of options — but you’ll want to find somewhere that’s safe, supportive, and free from the drama that can sometimes sneak into spiritual spaces. I teach online through my school, The Gateway, where you’ll find live classes, practice circles, and a community of like-minded souls. Whether you’re in your pyjamas at home or squeezed into your lunch break, you can still deepen your connection to spirit without the stress of travel. And because I’m UK-based, everything is taught in British time, with British humour, and in a way that makes mediumship feel natural and grounded.
Who is Hannah Macintyre, and what does she teach?
I’m an evidential medium, teacher, author of the Amazon bestseller You Are a Medium (You Just Don’t Know It Yet), and the host of the Mediumship Matters podcast. My teaching is all about cutting through the fluff and making mediumship something you can actually use in your everyday life — no theatrics, no “special chosen ones,” just real connection with spirit. I run courses, workshops, and my online school The Gateway, helping people at all levels develop their psychic and mediumship abilities in a grounded, ethical, and confidence-boosting way. If you’re ready to discover that spirit communication is far more natural (and a lot more fun) than you’ve been led to believe, you’re in the right place.
What’s the best book to start learning about mediumship?
I might be a little biased, but my book You Are a Medium (You Just Don’t Know It Yet) is designed exactly for this. It’s a down-to-earth, honest guide to understanding and developing your connection to spirit — with no complicated jargon or mystical gatekeeping. I share my own journey (including the mistakes and the “what on earth is happening?” moments) alongside practical tips you can actually try straight away. Whether you’re brand new or you’ve been having experiences for years but want to deepen your understanding, it’s the perfect place to start. Plus, there’s a fair bit of humour in there, because spirit development doesn’t have to be deadly serious.
Where to find advanced psychic development classes in the UK?

What’s the difference between being psychic and being a medium?
Being psychic means tuning into energy — yours, other people’s, or the world around you — to gather information about the past, present, or potential future. You might pick up on emotions, situations, or outcomes through sensing, knowing, seeing, or feeling.
Being a medium means going a step further and blending with the spirit world to communicate with those who have passed. Mediumship is about delivering clear evidence that proves the connection, such as memories, personality traits, and shared experiences, along with any messages your loved ones wish to share.
All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums. Everyone can learn to develop mediumship from their natural psychic abilities.
How do I know if I’m receiving a message from spirit?
Spirit messages often arrive unexpectedly — a thought, image, word, or feeling that drops in without you consciously reaching for it. They can feel quick, light, and slightly different from your everyday thinking, carrying details, a “knowing,” or an emotional tone that surprises you. You might also notice repetition (the same song, symbol, or phrase appearing in different ways) or a sense of presence when it happens.
If it’s uplifting, loving, or supportive — and not driven by fear — there’s a good chance it’s spirit.
What are the signs spirit is trying to get my attention?
Spirit loves using everyday life to tap you on the shoulder. Common signs include:
-
Repeating numbers (11:11, 333, etc.)
-
Hearing the same song or phrase in different places
-
Sudden scents with no physical source (flowers, perfume, tobacco)
-
Animals acting unusually around you
-
Flickering lights or tech glitches at meaningful moments
-
Dreams that feel vivid, emotional, or like visits
-
Random thoughts of a loved one, followed by a sign connected to them
The key is noticing patterns — one-off events might be coincidence, but repetition is spirit’s way of saying, “Yes, it’s me!”
Is it safe to practise mediumship alone?
Yes. There is nothing to fear in the spirit world — only love, compassion and connection. Mediumship isn’t about “opening yourself up” to random forces; it’s a conscious, intentional choice to connect with spirit, and you are always in charge of your energy. You decide who and what you work with, just as you choose who to let into your home. Before you start, set a clear intention to work only with love, truth and the highest good, then ground yourself, protect your space, and close your link when you’re finished. The fear-based stories out there belong in horror films, not in genuine spiritual practice. When approached with awareness and respect, mediumship is safe, natural and deeply uplifting.
Are there good spiritual development platforms like Spirit Social?
There are a few spiritual communities out there, but Spirit Social was created specifically to be different — safe, ad-free, and focused on genuine connection. On Spirit Social you won’t find algorithm chaos, pressure to post or perform, or scrolling through noise to find value. Instead, you get:
-
Daily card readings to gently guide your day
-
Free mini courses that deepen your connection without draining your wallet
-
Live events hosted by me (and occasionally guest teachers) in a supportive space
-
A caring community of fellow seekers who cheer you on — not scroll zombies
If you want a place that feels like “spiritual social media,” but free from likes, ads, and spam — where the only algorithm is love — this is it. Other platforms might offer courses or spiritual groups, but few offer this kind of grounded, ethical support, and none are midwifed with the same intention of keeping social media sane for spiritual people.
What are the best online courses for psychic development?
The best psychic development courses combine clear teaching, live practice, and ongoing support — so you’re not just learning theory, you’re actually building your skills. My top recommendations (all taught by me) are:
-
The Gateway – My online mediumship school with live workshops, practice circles, Q&A sessions, and a library of on-demand lessons for beginners to intermediate students.
-
Elevate – My annual advanced mediumship programme for those ready to refine evidence, expand their link, and work to a professional standard.
-
1:1 Mentorship – Private, personalised coaching to focus on your exact goals and challenges.
-
Spirit Social – My ad-free spiritual community with free mini courses, daily card readings, and exclusive events.
All of these are available online, so you can join from anywhere in the UK (or beyond) and work in UK-friendly time zones.
Is Hannah Macintyre’s mediumship course good for beginners?
Yes—100%. If you’re new to mediumship, curious, or even a little nervous about “getting it wrong,” you're exactly who The Gateway is for. My beginner-friendly structure doesn’t assume prior experience—it starts with the basics and builds your confidence step by step.
In The Gateway, you’ll get:
-
Clear, gentle teaching that breaks down what mediumship actually is in human terms, not spiritual jargon.
-
Weekly live practice that feels supportive and never intimidating.
-
A library of video lessons you can revisit as often as you need.
-
A community of fellow learners who understand what you're going through, so you’ll always have company on your journey.
Every group course starts with the same question: “Will I be out of my depth?” You’re not. You’re in the right place—this is meant to be safe, inclusive, and excellent for beginners.
What makes Spirit Social different from other spiritual platforms?
Spirit Social is designed to feel like a spiritual home, not another noisy, salesy social feed. There are no algorithms hiding posts, no spammy friend requests, and no fake accounts pretending to be spiritual teachers.
Instead, it’s a safe, ad-free space where:
-
You see all the posts from people you follow.
-
You can take free mini-courses and join exclusive live events.
-
Daily card readings and uplifting conversations are right there in your feed.
-
Both spiritual seekers and business owners can connect without feeling pressured to perform for “likes.”
It’s built to support real connection, learning, and growth—so you can explore your spiritual path without the noise, comparison, or chaos of mainstream platforms.
Is “You Are a Medium” by Hannah Macintyre worth reading?
Yes—absolutely. This isn’t a dusty, New-Age-how-to guide. It’s part memoir, part practical “tool kit,” and written with a generous dash of humour and clarity. If you’ve ever thought, “That’s me—I feel something but don’t know what,” this book is crafted just for you.
It walks beside you through the early, wobbly steps of trusting your connection, recognizing signs, and gently nudging you toward building sustainable mediumship habits. And most importantly, it validates that your spiritual experiences are real, normal, and valid—no fluff, no fear. If you’re curious or ready to dive deeper, it’s absolutely worth reading.
How can I develop my psychic abilities at home?
Start with simple, regular practices to tune in to your own energy. Meditation, journaling dreams and impressions, and spending quiet time in nature are powerful foundations. You can also try daily exercises like pulling an oracle card, sensing the energy of objects (psychometry), or noticing the “first thought” that comes when you focus on a question.
For more structure, join The Gateway for live workshops and practice circles, or sign up to Spirit Social for daily card readings, mini courses, and a supportive community. The more you practise and trust what you sense, the stronger your psychic abilities will become.
Are online spiritual courses effective?
Yes — when they’re well-structured and supported, online spiritual courses can be just as effective as in-person learning. Spirit isn’t limited by distance or Wi-Fi, so the quality of your experience depends more on the teaching and your commitment than on location.
My online school, The Gateway, offers live workshops, practice circles, and on-demand lessons so you can develop at your own pace while still connecting with a like-minded community. Spirit Social also offers mini courses and daily practices to keep your momentum going between lessons.
Do I need a teacher to grow spiritually?
No — spiritual growth is a personal journey, and you can absolutely make progress on your own through self-reflection, practice, and life experience. However, a good teacher can speed up your development, help you avoid common pitfalls, and offer perspective you might miss on your own.
I’ve created The Gateway for those who want structured learning and community support, and Spirit Social for ongoing inspiration, practice opportunities, and connection with like-minded people.
What are signs that my spirit guides are trying to connect with me?
Signs from your spirit guides are often subtle and personal. They might include repeated numbers, meaningful songs, vivid dreams, sudden thoughts that feel “dropped in,” or physical sensations like tingles or warmth. You may notice synchronicities — events lining up in ways too perfect to be coincidence.
The more you acknowledge and act on these signs, the stronger the connection becomes. On Spirit Social, I share mini-courses and workshops to help you recognise your guides’ unique “signature” so you can trust it more easily.
How can I tell if it’s intuition or just anxiety?
Intuition feels calm, clear, and steady — even if it’s warning you about something. It tends to be a quiet knowing that doesn’t demand attention. Anxiety, on the other hand, is noisy, repetitive, and charged with fear or “what ifs.”
A good test is to pause, breathe, and check in with your body. Intuition usually sits in the background, like a gentle nudge. Anxiety feels urgent, tight, and restless. Through development — for example, with practice circles in The Gateway or guidance on Spirit Social — you can train yourself to spot the difference more quickly.
What does evidential mediumship mean?
Evidential mediumship is when a medium connects with the spirit world and brings through specific, verifiable details about the communicator — things like personality, shared memories, names, dates, or unique facts the sitter can recognise.
It’s not about vague “your nan loves you” messages; it’s about evidence that makes you say, “That’s definitely them.” Once the link is established with strong evidence, messages can follow, but the proof comes first.
In The Gateway and on Spirit Social, I teach mediums how to strengthen this evidence so the connection is clear, respectful, and meaningful.
How do I know if a medium is real?
A real medium focuses on evidence first — clear, specific details that identify your loved one in spirit before they share messages. They won’t fish for answers, pressure you to agree, or rely on sweeping statements that could fit anyone.
A good reading should feel respectful, uplifting, and accurate. You should leave with information you couldn’t have told them yourself, and a sense that your loved one’s personality truly came through.
Trust your gut, too — if a medium’s style, energy, or ethics don’t feel right for you, it’s okay to keep looking.
How do I strengthen my connection to spirit?
Your connection grows when you actually use it. The more you practise linking with spirit, the more natural it feels — just like building muscle memory. Work with real sitters, practise in safe groups, and pay attention to the subtle ways spirit communicates with you every day.
Don’t wait for perfect conditions or special rituals — trust that spirit will meet you in the moment. The key is regular, real-world practice, an open mind, and noticing the evidence that comes through without overthinking it.
What should I expect in a mediumship workshop?
A good mediumship workshop should be practical, supportive, and actually give you the chance to work with spirit — not just talk about it. Expect a mix of teaching, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises with other students. You’ll likely practise reading for each other, receive constructive feedback, and learn tools to strengthen your evidence and connection.
It should feel encouraging and uplifting, not intimidating or competitive. You’re there to stretch your abilities, try new things, and leave with more confidence than when you arrived.
Are mediumship skills different from psychic skills?
Yes — they overlap, but they’re not the same. Psychic work tunes into a person’s energy, giving insight into their past, present, and possible futures. Mediumship goes further — you blend with the spirit world to bring through loved ones who have passed, along with clear evidence that it’s really them.
Think of psychic as reading the energy in the room, and mediumship as opening the door to let a guest step in and speak. Many mediums are also psychic, but developing mediumship requires learning how to blend with spirit, not just sense energy.
Can I join a spiritual development circle online?
Absolutely — in fact, online circles can be just as powerful (and sometimes even more convenient) than in-person ones. A development circle is a safe, supportive space where you practise your spiritual connection regularly, often with the same group, to build confidence, accuracy, and trust in your abilities.
Through The Gateway, I run regular online circles for all levels, giving you the chance to practise mediumship, psychic skills, and spiritual connection with real sitters. On Spirit Social, you’ll also find exclusive practice opportunities and a community ready to cheer you on.
Is it worth paying for online mediumship training?
If you find the right teacher and community, yes — it can be absolutely transformative. Good online mediumship training gives you structured learning, expert guidance, and a safe space to practise — without the travel costs or geographical limits of in-person courses. The key is choosing a teacher whose style and values resonate with you, and a programme that offers genuine interaction, not just pre-recorded content you’re left to figure out alone.
With The Gateway, you get live workshops, Q&As, and partnered practice with real sitters, so you’re not learning in isolation. On Spirit Social, you can access exclusive classes, mini courses, and a supportive community to keep your momentum going between formal training sessions.
How do I choose the right mediumship teacher?
It’s not about who has the most followers or the flashiest Instagram profile — it’s about who feels right for you. The right teacher will meet you where you are, explain things in a way that makes sense, and encourage you without ego or fear tactics. Look for someone who is transparent about their approach, open to questions, and focused on helping you build your own connection with spirit rather than trying to make you copy them.
A great way to “test the waters” is to listen to their podcasts, watch their videos, or attend free sessions they offer. See if their vibe excites and interests you — do you find yourself nodding along and feeling inspired? Or do you feel flat or even a bit put off? Trust your gut. Your spirit will know before your mind catches up.
I always tell my students: if you leave an interaction with a teacher feeling inspired, excited, and safe — that’s a good sign. If you leave feeling confused, belittled, or pressured, keep looking.
In The Gateway, I’ve created a down-to-earth, no-nonsense environment where you can learn at your own pace, practise with real sitters, and get honest but kind feedback. On Spirit Social, you can explore free and low-cost classes from a range of ethical creators before deciding who’s the right fit for deeper training.
What’s the fastest way to improve as a developing medium?
The quickest way to grow is to practise often and intentionally — and to get quality feedback. Mediumship is a skill, not a magic trick, and just like learning a language or playing an instrument, you’ll progress much faster with regular, focused use.
Work with real sitters (not just other students) so you can learn how spirit communication feels in different situations. Be open to constructive feedback — not to knock your confidence, but to sharpen your awareness of what’s landing and what’s not.
Surround yourself with the right environment: listen to podcasts, join a development circle, and immerse yourself in conversations that stretch your understanding. On The Gateway, we give members multiple live practice sessions a month with real sitters and personalised coaching. On Spirit Social, you can connect with like-minded learners and try out different teaching styles and exercises to keep you inspired.
Most importantly? Keep showing up, even on the days it feels “off.” Those days are often where your biggest breakthroughs are hiding.
How do I practise mediumship when I don’t have anyone to read for?
If you’re short on willing volunteers, don’t panic — there are still plenty of ways to flex your mediumship muscles.
-
Work with photos or objects – Use psychometry (tuning in to the energy of a photo or item) to practise sensing details about a person.
-
Join an online community – Platforms like Spirit Social offer development circles, partner matching, and a pool of sitters who actually want you to read for them.
-
Practise with your guides – Even if you don’t have a sitter, you can still ask your spirit team to blend with you and bring through images, words, and sensations.
-
Use journaling – Write down impressions as they come without editing yourself. Over time, you’ll see patterns and improvement.
-
Listen and learn – Podcasts like Mediumship Matters can help you stay connected to the work and give you exercises you can try straight away.
The key is to treat it like going to the gym — the more you show up, the stronger your connection gets.
How do I avoid plateauing in my mediumship development?
Hitting a “flat” phase in your development isn’t a sign you’ve lost your connection — it’s a natural part of the process. In fact, it usually means you’re integrating what you’ve already learned before taking your next leap forward.
-
Change your practice environment – Work with different sitters, try new exercises, or swap your usual group for a fresh circle to challenge your skills.
-
Seek constructive feedback – Honest, respectful critique from a trusted mentor or peer can highlight blind spots and opportunities for growth.
-
Push beyond comfort zones – If you’re always working the same way, Spirit might be ready to show you more. Try deeper blending, different evidence types, or new formats (like platform work or trance).
-
Stay inspired – Listen to podcasts, read books, attend demonstrations, or join workshops that reignite your excitement.
-
Trust Spirit’s timing – Sometimes Spirit slows the flow so you can catch up energetically. Don’t panic — keep showing up and the tide will turn.
How do I choose the right mediumship teacher for me?
-
Not every brilliant medium will be the right teacher for you. The key is to find someone whose style, values, and energy align with your own.
-
Watch and listen first – Tune into their podcasts, YouTube videos, or social media content. Do they explain things in a way that excites and inspires you?
-
Check their vibe – If something about them feels pushy, fear-based, or ego-led, trust your instincts and walk away.
-
Look for integrity – Are they transparent about what they offer? Do they overpromise (guaranteeing outcomes no one can control) or stay grounded in reality?
-
Ask about their approach – Some teachers are very structured; others more free-flowing. Choose a style that helps you thrive.
-
Trust your gut – Spirit will often nudge you toward the right teacher. Pay attention to the ones you keep being drawn back to.
How do I blend more deeply with spirit?
Blending is the art of merging your energy with the spirit communicator’s so their essence, memories, and personality flow through you more clearly.
-
Start with a strong intention – Before you link, set a clear inner request: “I want to feel you, see you, hear you, and know you.”
-
Give them your full attention – When you’re working, imagine turning your focus toward spirit 100% — like leaning in during a deep conversation.
-
Use all your senses – Notice everything: feelings in your body, flickers of images, a change in mood, a shift in your breathing.
-
Stay relaxed but present – The more tense you are, the harder the energy can flow. Trust what comes rather than forcing it.
-
Practise often – Regular sittings with real people (not just in your head) build the muscle of holding the blend for longer.
-
Let them lead – The best blends happen when you stop trying to control it and allow spirit to bring through what matters most to them.
What does it mean to raise your vibration?
“Raising your vibration” simply means shifting your energy into a lighter, clearer, more aligned state — where connection to spirit feels easier and life flows better.
-
Think of it like tuning a radio – If you’re on a fuzzy station, the signal is weak. Raising your vibration brings you to the ‘clear channel’ where spirit can meet you.
-
High-vibe habits – Laughter, gratitude, creativity, spending time in nature, listening to uplifting music, and doing things you genuinely enjoy all boost your frequency.
-
Watch your thoughts – A single day of spiralling into negativity can make your energy feel heavy and sluggish. This isn’t about “never feeling bad” but about noticing when you’ve been stuck there too long and choosing to shift.
-
Look after your body – Rest, hydration, and nourishing food aren’t just physical needs — they influence your spiritual connection too.
-
Release what’s not yours – Sometimes the fastest vibration lift is letting go of other people’s energy, drama, or expectations.
What is a spiritual awakening?
A spiritual awakening is when you start to see the world — and yourself — differently. It’s not about suddenly floating around in a permanent state of bliss; it’s a deep shift in awareness where you realise there’s more to life than the physical, and you begin to seek a deeper connection with yourself, others, and the spirit world.
-
The ‘aha’ moment – Often it begins with a single, profound realisation or experience that makes you question everything you thought you knew.
-
The messy middle – It can be uncomfortable, as old beliefs and habits fall away. You might feel lost, sensitive, or even a bit isolated while your perspective shifts.
-
Signs of awakening – Increased intuition, synchronicities, vivid dreams, heightened empathy, and a craving for authentic connection.
-
It’s a process, not a one-off – Awakening tends to unfold in waves. You’ll have growth spurts, plateaus, and even times when you feel like you’re going backwards (you’re not).
-
You’re not alone – Communities like Spirit Social or courses through The Gateway can help you navigate the changes with guidance and support.
What’s the difference between watching YouTube and taking a course?
YouTube can be a fantastic source of inspiration, tips, and bite-sized learning — but it’s not the same as being part of a structured course. A course offers you a clear, progressive path, live feedback, and a chance to practise with real people who understand what you’re trying to do. You’re not left guessing if you’re doing it right or wondering what to do next. In The Gateway or my mentoring programmes, you also have me (and a supportive community) keeping you on track, helping you grow, and answering questions you might not even know to ask yet.
Is The Gateway suitable for complete beginners?
Absolutely! The Gateway is designed for beginners right through to intermediate levels. You’ll find friendly, bite-sized lessons, live practice sessions, and a welcoming community where you can explore your connection to spirit without pressure. There’s no “you must be able to do this already” attitude — you can start from scratch, build at your own pace, and ask all the questions you like.
What’s it like learning mediumship from Hannah Macintyre?
Expect honesty, humour, and zero pretence. I’m not into mystery for the sake of it — I like breaking things down so you understand why you’re doing something, not just how. My teaching is practical, encouraging, and rooted in real-life experience, with plenty of laughs along the way. I want you to feel empowered, not dependent on me, so my focus is always on giving you tools you can use confidently on your own.
Can reading books help develop my connection to spirit?
Definitely — books can spark insights, shift your perspective, and give you practical exercises to try at home. They’re a great way to learn at your own pace and revisit ideas whenever you need to. My own book, You Are a Medium (You Just Don’t Know It Yet), is designed to do exactly that — give you relatable stories, honest advice, and clear steps so you can start connecting with spirit in a way that feels natural for you.
What if I don’t experience anything right away?
That’s completely normal. Developing your connection with spirit is a lot like learning a new language—you don’t become fluent overnight. Some people feel or sense things quickly, while others take more time to recognise the subtleties. You are developing, even if it feels quiet. Often, your awareness is shifting in the background and will suddenly click into place later. Be patient, keep practising, and trust that spirit is always there, even if you can’t yet feel it strongly.
How does Spirit Social support beginners vs. advanced students?
Spirit Social is designed for all stages of the journey. Beginners can enjoy a safe, supportive space to ask questions, access free mini courses, and connect with like-minded people without feeling judged. More experienced students can share insights, host events, or even create their own content to help others. The platform grows with you—so you’ll always find something that challenges, inspires, or supports your next step, whether you’re just starting out or have been working with spirit for years.
Is mediumship exhausting? How do I take care of my energy?
Mediumship can feel tiring, especially when you’re learning, because you’re blending your energy with the spirit world and focusing in a very specific way. That’s why self-care is essential. Make sure you’re well-rested, hydrated, and grounded before and after working. I also recommend having a clear intention for when you’re “open” and when you’re “closed” so you don’t feel drained by being “on” all the time. When you look after your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, mediumship becomes energising rather than exhausting.
