Evidential Medium, Author & Spiritual Teacher

The Fear Filter is a practical guide by evidential medium Hannah Macintyre, and the seventh book in the Mediumship Matters Mini Guides. It explores where our fear of the spirit world comes from, how belief shapes what we experience, and why demons, hauntings, curses and attachments may be far more human than spiritual.
What if there’s nothing to be afraid of?
Hannah used to be a Ghostbuster. She’s a certificated entity release practitioner, and for years she believed in demons, attachments, hexes and trapped souls. She cleared houses, pulled hexes out of people and held rescue circles to move spirits on.
Today she lives opposite a graveyard. She works with the spirit world in her own home every day, with no protection at all. She doesn’t get walk-in ghosts, and she doesn’t sleep with the landing light on.
What changed? She started asking questions. This book shares what she learnt, so you can look at your own fear, have a good poke at it, and see how much of it is really yours.
What This Book Is About
So much of what we fear about the spirit world was taught to us by teachers, families, churches, horror films and social media. Hannah calls it the fear filter: the lens of expectation that shapes what we see, feel and experience when we connect with energy.
The Fear Filter takes the big fears one at a time: demons and possession, haunted dolls, Ouija boards, curses, portals, trapped souls, things in the night, and death itself. Hannah shares how she came to see them differently, and why she believes nobody, ever, gets left behind.
The book also looks at where inherited fear comes from, from the witch trials to the Witchcraft Act. It shows how fear gets sold to frightened and grieving people, and how to protect yourself from what really does need protecting against: other people’s energy. Finally, it looks at the fear that lives in the medium, and how to do this work scared.

A Simpler Way to Understand Fear
Hannah is passionate about one thing above all: understanding how and why this work happens is fundamental to your results with it, and that includes your fear. When you don’t understand how energy and perception work, every heavy room feels like a haunting and every nightmare feels like an attack.
When you do understand it, fear starts to fall apart:
-
your mind builds images from energy, so if your “costume box” is full of horror films, that’s what you’ll see
-
what you expect is what you tend to experience
-
spirit are love, spirit are intelligent, and spirit have far more power than we do
-
if the angels can clear it, why would they need you?
Hannah doesn’t ask you to take her word for it. As she says in the foreword, she’d rather you questioned it, “the same way I eventually questioned everything I’d been taught.”

What Is The Fear Filter About?
The Fear Filter by Hannah Macintyre is Book 7 of the Mediumship Matters Mini Guides, a series of short, practical books on spiritual and mediumship development. It explores fear of the spirit world, and argues that belief and expectation shape what we experience when we connect with energy. Drawing on her past as an entity release practitioner, Hannah questions demons, possession, haunted dolls, Ouija boards, hexes, portals and trapped souls. She explains why nobody gets left behind after death, and covers night-time experiences, inherited fear, the commercialisation of fear, protection from other people’s energy, and working through fear as a medium. Written in an honest, funny and down-to-earth style, it’s designed for anyone who wants a fear-free relationship with the spirit world.
About Hannah
Hi, I’m Hannah Macintyre — evidential medium, Amazon bestselling author, podcast host, and spiritual mentor. For over a decade, I’ve been supporting people to explore their sensitivity and connection with Spirit in a grounded, accessible, and deeply human way.
I don’t believe mediumship is reserved for a chosen few. I believe it is a natural capacity that many of us carry, often quietly, and that with the right understanding and encouragement, it can be developed with confidence.
My own journey was not instant or dramatic. Like many people, I doubted what I was receiving and assumed I needed certainty before I could trust it. What I learned is that mediumship is not about getting everything right. It is about listening, responding, and allowing communication with Spirit to unfold.
I used to be a Ghostbuster. Now I live opposite a graveyard and sleep with the light off. I’d love the same freedom for you

Frequently Asked Questions About Fear and the Spirit World
Are demons and evil spirits real?
In Hannah’s experience, no. She believed in them for years and saw them, and when she stopped believing in them, she stopped seeing them. She believes heavy or frightening energy is human and psychic, not spirit, and that we draw it to ourselves through our expectations. She’s also clear that if something has frightened you, she isn’t saying it didn’t happen.
Can spirits get stuck or trapped?
Hannah doesn’t believe anybody gets stuck, ever. When we pass, we go home. What can linger is energy: the sadness or unhappiness left in a place, a bit like a smell soaked into the curtains. That’s residue, not a person.
Do people who die by suicide get left behind?
No. Hannah believes nobody who dies by suicide is stuck, punished or waiting to be rescued. They go home like everybody else, held in exactly the same love. If you’re struggling yourself, please talk to somebody today. In the UK and Ireland you can call the Samaritans free, at any time, on 116 123.
Are Ouija boards dangerous?
Hannah doesn’t believe so. In her view, a spirit board is a piece of card or plastic with letters on it, and what drives it is the energy and expectation in the room. Go in expecting something scary and that’s what you’ll get. Go in with laughter and an open heart, and it’s often a loved one who comes to say hello.
Why do frightening things happen at night?
At the edge of sleep, your logical brain is clocking off and your imagination is clocking on. Many night-time frights can be explained by sleep paralysis, which is common and harmless. If you, or a child you care for, are having frightening experiences regularly, can’t sleep, or it’s affecting everyday life, please speak to your GP as well.
Do I need to protect myself before connecting with spirit?
Hannah doesn’t protect herself from spirit. She does protect herself from people. But if protection helps you feel safe, she encourages you to use it, because energy responds to belief. The book includes the simple protection she used to use, and her simple way of clearing a room.

Switch the Big Light On
Fear will still visit, because you’re human. But the next time something frightens you, stop and ask the questions before you decide what it is. Then put the big light on, make a cup of tea, and get on with your life.
Because the spirit world isn’t a shadow at the end of the bed or a demon in a doll. As Hannah puts it: “I honestly, hand on heart, believe the spirit world is only love. I am not afraid. It’s nothing but magic.”
