Why Do Practice Readings Feel So Different From Real Readings?

If you've ever left a practice reading feeling completely deflated, I want you to know something.

It might not be your mediumship.

It might be the energy.

One of the biggest lessons Spirit have taught me over the years is that need is the fuel that powers a reading.

It's something I wish someone had explained to me when I first started developing, because I spent years wondering why some readings felt effortless while others felt like I was dragging my mediumship uphill.

Now I understand why.

Every reading has a different kind of need

Let's imagine someone books an evidential mediumship reading.

Ideally, they're not in the depths of raw, overwhelming grief. If they are, I'd gently encourage them to seek grief counselling first, because a medium isn't a replacement for the support they need.

Instead, the ideal sitter is someone who misses their loved one deeply but has reached a place where they're looking for connection rather than rescue.

Perhaps they've been noticing signs.

Perhaps they simply want reassurance that their loved one is still around.

Perhaps they want to know they're being seen from the Spirit world.

That's a healthy need.

They're looking for reconnection, not someone to fix their life.

Now compare that with a practice reading.

The energy is completely different.

The need has moved

In a professional reading, the need belongs to the sitter.

They've chosen you.

They've invested their time and money.

They genuinely want to hear from Spirit.

That creates a very different energetic environment.

But in a practice circle?

The need often belongs to the developing medium.

You're there to learn.

Spirit aren't simply trying to comfort the sitter.

They're teaching you.

That's a completely different job.

Why practice readings can feel harder

This is something that frustrates so many developing mediums.

You practise.

You study.

You do everything you're supposed to do.

Then you sit in front of another student who's already had three readings that week and...

Nothing seems to flow.

Or the evidence feels clunky.

Or Spirit seem unusually quiet.

You wonder whether your mediumship has disappeared.

It probably hasn't.

The lesson simply isn't the same.

When you're practising, Spirit may be teaching you:

  • how to keep going when you receive a "no"

  • how to trust unusual evidence

  • how to work through self-doubt

  • how to stay present when the connection feels quieter

  • how to surrender rather than control

Those lessons are every bit as valuable as delivering an incredible reading.

Sometimes they're even more valuable.

Why people who have lots of readings are difficult to read for

This can feel controversial, but I think it's important to say.

If someone has had lots and lots of readings in a short space of time, the energy changes.

The first time they hear from their loved one, it's often life-changing.

The second reading is still incredibly meaningful.

The third can be wonderful too.

But eventually something shifts.

Instead of simply receiving the reading, they're naturally comparing it to previous experiences.

"This medium described Mum differently."

"Another medium mentioned that before."

"That's not what someone else said."

They're not trying to be difficult.

They're being human.

But comparison changes the energy.

And energy matters.

Practice circles aren't real-world readings

This is something I wish every developing medium understood.

Practice circles are essential.

They're where you build confidence.

They're where you make mistakes.

They're where Spirit stretch you.

But they aren't the same as reading for someone who has chosen to sit with you because they genuinely want to hear from their loved one.

The emotional energy is different.

The expectation is different.

The need is different.

That doesn't mean practice readings are less valuable.

It simply means they're serving a different purpose.

You don't have to practise forever

People often ask me how long they should practise before charging for readings.

The honest answer?

There isn't a magic number.

I've met people who've attended development circles for thirty years but rarely practised outside them.

I've also met people who'd only been developing for a year but had completed hundreds of thoughtful practice readings.

Time alone isn't the measure.

Experience is.

Eventually, though, many developing mediums reach a point where they're no longer learning from reading for the same people over and over again.

If every sitter has already had multiple readings that week...

If every reading feels flat...

If you're consistently finding yourself reading for people who are simply helping you practise...

It may be time to gently move into charging.

Not because you're chasing money.

Because you're ready to experience a different kind of energy.

Charging changes more than your bank balance

This is where people sometimes misunderstand me.

Charging for a reading isn't about proving your worth.

It's about commitment.

Someone who has chosen to invest in a reading has usually thought carefully about it.

They've chosen you.

They're emotionally present.

They're engaged.

That changes the reading before you've even started.

The need is sitting opposite you.

Not behind your own eyes.

Don't judge your mediumship by your practice readings

This might be the most important thing I can say.

Practice readings are designed to teach you.

They're not designed to prove how good you are.

If every practice reading felt magical, effortless and deeply validating, what would you actually learn?

Growth isn't comfortable.

Spirit often expand your mediumship by placing you in situations that stretch you.

That might mean unusual evidence.

Quiet communicators.

Unexpected "no's."

Moments where you have to trust yourself despite every part of your human brain wanting to stop.

That's development.

Trust the lesson, not just the reading

One of the biggest shifts you can make as a developing medium is to stop asking:

"Was that a good reading?"

Instead ask:

"What was Spirit trying to teach me?"

Sometimes the answer will be about your evidence.

Sometimes it'll be about your confidence.

Sometimes it'll simply be about learning to keep going.

Because the need in that moment isn't always with the sitter.

Sometimes...

The need is yours.

And that's exactly why Spirit brought you there.

This article is based on an episode of the Mediumship Matters podcast, where I explore why practice readings feel so different from professional readings and explain why "need" is one of the most overlooked aspects of mediumship development.

If you'd rather listen than read, you'll find the full episode wherever you get your podcasts.

Developing your mediumship?

Remember this:

Not every practice reading is there to prove how good you are.

Some are there to teach you something you'll need for the rest of your mediumship journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do practice readings feel harder than professional readings?

Practice readings often have a very different energy. In a professional reading, the sitter has chosen to be there because they genuinely want to hear from their loved one. In a practice reading, the need is often with the developing medium, who is there to learn. That change in energy can make the reading feel completely different, even when your connection with Spirit is just as strong.

Why don't my practice readings feel powerful?

Many developing mediums expect every practice reading to feel profound, but that's rarely how mediumship develops. Practice readings are learning spaces where Spirit may be teaching you trust, resilience, patience or how to work through self-doubt. The purpose isn't always to produce your best ever reading.

When should I stop offering free practice readings?

There's no fixed timeline. The right time depends on your confidence, the quality of your evidence and how much experience you've gained. If you're consistently reading for the same people who have had multiple practice readings and you feel you've stopped learning from that environment, it may be time to start charging a small fee and reading for people with a genuine need for a connection.

Does charging for a reading make the energy different?

Often, yes. Charging isn't about placing a value on your mediumship; it's about commitment. People who invest in a reading have usually chosen you carefully and are emotionally engaged in the experience. That creates a different energy from someone simply volunteering to help you practise.

How many practice readings should I do before reading professionally?

There isn't a magic number. Some people develop quickly because they practise regularly and reflect on every reading. Others may attend development circles for years without gaining much practical experience. Focus on the quality of your practice, your consistency and your willingness to learn, rather than counting the months or years.

Is it normal to get more "no's" in practice readings?

Yes. Practice readings are designed to stretch your mediumship. Spirit may use them to help you trust unusual evidence, develop your interpretation skills or learn how to recover when something doesn't immediately make sense. Receiving occasional "no's" is a normal part of development and doesn't mean you're failing.

Why do some people have lots of mediumship readings?

People seek repeated readings for many reasons, including comfort, curiosity or reassurance. However, after a certain point, repeated readings can change the energy of the experience, as people naturally begin comparing mediums and expecting familiar evidence. Learning to live with the knowledge that your loved ones are still with you is often a healthier long-term goal than seeking constant reassurance.

Can grief affect a mediumship reading?

Yes. Someone experiencing intense, raw grief may find it difficult to receive the full benefit of a reading because they're understandably overwhelmed by their emotions. In those circumstances, grief counselling or additional emotional support may be more appropriate before seeking mediumship, with a reading becoming valuable when they're ready for connection rather than crisis.

What should I focus on during practice readings?

Instead of asking yourself, "Was that a good reading?", try asking, "What was Spirit teaching me?" Every practice reading offers an opportunity to develop your evidence, strengthen your trust, improve your communication or deepen your understanding of how Spirit work. When you focus on the lesson rather than perfection, your mediumship naturally grows.
