Can You Develop Mediumship Without Becoming a Professional Medium?

The short answer? Yes. Absolutely.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see in mediumship development is the idea that learning to work with Spirit automatically means you're supposed to become a professional medium.

It doesn't.

Somewhere along the line we've created an unwritten career ladder that many people seem to think they have to climb. You start learning, then you begin giving practice readings, then someone tells you to start charging, then you're expected to demonstrate on platform, and before you know it, everyone seems to think you're destined to teach.

But who decided that?

More importantly... did Spirit?

Most people don't start because they want a business

When people first begin developing their mediumship, it's rarely because they're dreaming of running a spiritual business.

Most people come to mediumship because they're fascinated.

Perhaps they've had an experience they can't explain. Maybe they've lost someone they love and want to understand whether life continues. Perhaps they're naturally intuitive and finally want to explore it. Or maybe they simply feel drawn towards Spirit without really knowing why.

It starts as curiosity.

Wonder.

Connection.

For many of us, mediumship becomes one of the most extraordinary journeys we'll ever take. Not because of where it leads professionally, but because of how it changes us personally.

And that's enough.

The unwritten career ladder

One thing I've noticed over the years is that many mediums, often without even realising it, end up encouraging others along exactly the same path they followed.

It tends to look something like this:

• Learn mediumship.

• Give practice readings.

• Start charging.

• Demonstrate publicly.

• Teach.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that journey if that's genuinely what you want.

The problem comes when people start believing it's the only journey.

I've seen students receive readings where they're told their next step is teaching or platform work, when all they really wanted was to deepen their connection with Spirit.

That makes me pause.

Not because I don't believe in guidance from Spirit, but because we're human beings interpreting energy. We all have expectations, experiences and unconscious assumptions that can colour how we understand what we're receiving.

Sometimes what we think is guidance is simply tradition.

Spirit don't tell you what to do

This is something I feel really strongly about.

Spirit inspire.

Spirit encourage.

Spirit gently nudge.

But they don't dictate your life.

Every important decision I've made has started with a question.

When Spirit Social came into my life, it wasn't because Spirit arrived one day and announced, "Right Hannah, here's your next career move."

It came because I was asking.

How do we create a safer space for spiritual people?

How do we help ethical practitioners be seen?

How do we move away from some of the unhealthy behaviours social media encourages?

The answer arrived because I'd asked the question.

That's very different from Spirit handing out life instructions.

So if you've had a reading where someone tells you that your destiny is to become a professional medium, remember that you always have choice.

Always.

There's a difference between charging and building a business

This is where things get a bit blurry.

At a certain stage of development, practice readings can become limiting.

When someone volunteers to be a practice sitter, the energy is different. They're often doing you a favour rather than desperately wanting to hear from their loved ones. The need is different, and that changes the dynamic of the reading.

Charging a small amount can sometimes create a healthier exchange. People booking genuinely want the connection. They're invested in the experience.

But charging for readings doesn't automatically mean you need a website, a social media strategy, a marketing funnel and a five-year business plan.

Those are two completely different things.

Think about going to the gym.

I love pushing myself. I love seeing what my body can do. I enjoy learning, improving and challenging myself.

That doesn't mean I want to become a professional athlete.

Mediumship can be exactly the same.

You can absolutely love developing without wanting to build a business around it.

Don't let pressure take the joy away

One of my biggest worries is that we're losing people from mediumship because they think development automatically leads to public visibility.

They don't want thousands of followers.

They don't want to spend every day creating content.

They don't want to think about advertising, websites or tax returns.

They simply want to work with Spirit.

And honestly?

That's a beautiful reason to develop.

Some of the most gifted people I've ever met have no interest whatsoever in being known publicly.

One of the most powerful readings I ever received came from someone who doesn't charge, doesn't advertise and has absolutely no desire to become a recognised medium.

The quality of their connection had nothing to do with the size of their audience.

A quiet mediumship practice is still valid

Before my work became what it is today, I had what I'd call a very gentle little business.

It wasn't an empire.

It wasn't a brand.

It wasn't about growth targets or algorithms.

It quietly paid for my next course.

Sometimes it bought treats for the children on a Friday after school.

It allowed me to keep learning.

Looking back, some of the most meaningful work I ever did happened during those years.

It was soft.

It was calm.

It was enough.

I'm incredibly grateful for where my business has taken me now, and I genuinely love what I do. If your dream is to build a thriving spiritual business, I will be cheering you on every step of the way.

But if that isn't your dream?

That's equally valid.

Sometimes the reading is there to teach discernment

One of the funniest examples of this happened during one of my own spiritual assessments.

The wonderful Lynn Parker told me:

"Whatever you do... don't write a book."

Now, if you know me at all, you'll know that's probably the fastest way to make me write one.

Spirit know us.

Sometimes a reading isn't about giving instructions.

Sometimes it's about showing us what lights us up.

Sometimes it's about revealing what we truly want by noticing our reaction.

If someone tells you your future is on platform and your immediate response is, "Absolutely not," don't ignore that feeling.

Sit with it.

Explore it.

You might change your mind one day.

You might not.

Either is okay.

Your mediumship belongs to you

Your relationship with Spirit isn't measured by how many readings you give.

It's not measured by how many followers you have.

It's not measured by whether you teach workshops or demonstrate in front of hundreds of people.

It's measured by your willingness to keep showing up with honesty, curiosity and integrity.

If your greatest joy is sitting quietly with Spirit in your own home, that's enough.

If you want to give a handful of readings every month, that's enough.

If you want to build a business that reaches thousands of people, that's enough too.

There isn't one right way to be a medium.

There is only the path that feels aligned for you.

And that's the one I believe Spirit will always encourage.

Some people choose to offer free readings throughout their lives, while others charge to create a balanced energy exchange or because they want to make time for their mediumship alongside other commitments. The important thing is that your choice feels right for you.

Can mediumship just be a hobby?

I don't particularly like calling mediumship a hobby because it often becomes much more meaningful than that. But yes, it can absolutely be something you develop purely for your own interest, healing and connection with Spirit, without ever turning it into a business.

Do Spirit want me to become a medium?

Spirit may encourage you to explore your abilities, but in my experience they don't dictate your life choices. They guide, inspire and support you, but they don't force you into a particular career. You always have free will, and your mediumship journey should feel aligned with who you are.

Do I have to demonstrate on platform to become a good medium?

Not at all. Platform mediumship is a wonderful way to serve Spirit if it calls to you, but it isn't the only way to develop. Many excellent mediums never demonstrate publicly, and many people develop incredibly strong evidence through private readings or simply by working with Spirit for their own growth.

Is it okay if I only want to give a few readings a month?

Absolutely. Not everyone wants to build a full-time business. Some mediums enjoy offering just a handful of readings each month while working in another career or enjoying retirement. There is no minimum number of readings you need to give to be a "real" medium.

How do I know if I should become a professional medium?

Ask yourself one simple question: does the idea genuinely excite you? If building a business, helping lots of people and sharing your work publicly lights you up, it may be the right path. If it fills you with dread, that's worth listening to too. Mediumship doesn't have to look the same for everyone.

Can I change my mind later?

Of course. You might spend years developing just for yourself before deciding you'd like to offer readings professionally. Equally, you might build a business and later decide to step back. Your mediumship journey will evolve as you do, and that's perfectly natural.
