How to Clear the Energy in Your Home

Have you ever walked into your home and thought,
"Something just feels... off."
Not frightening.
Not sinister.
Just heavy.
Perhaps the rooms feel stagnant. Maybe you've been through a difficult period, had an argument, experienced a bereavement or simply feel as though the atmosphere in your home has changed.
People often ask me how to clear the energy in a house.
My answer usually surprises them.
Because I don't think you need complicated rituals or expensive tools.
I think your intention is far more powerful than you realise.
Why does the energy in a home feel heavy?
I don't believe every uncomfortable feeling in a house has a supernatural explanation.
Sometimes life is simply... life.
Stress.
Grief.
Arguments.
Illness.
Exhaustion.
All of these things leave an emotional imprint on us, and I believe they can affect the atmosphere of the spaces we live in too.
Just as you can walk into a room after an argument and immediately sense the tension, I think our homes absorb something of the energy we bring into them.
The good news?
Energy can change.
How do you clear the energy in your home?
This is the process I recommend most often.
Open every window and, if possible, every external door.
Fresh air immediately changes the feeling of a space.
Then, beginning in one room, pause for a moment.
Take a deep breath.
Imagine your own energy gently expanding until it fills the room.
You don't need to force anything.
Simply become aware of your presence.
Then, with kindness and confidence, say something like:
"Anything that isn't in alignment with the energy I want in this home, it's time for you to leave."
Visualise that energy leaving through the open window or door.
Then move into the next room and repeat the process.
That's it.
Simple.
Intentional.
Powerful.
Does sage really clear negative energy?
People often ask me whether they need to burn sage.
If you enjoy using sage, use it.
Personally, I'm a little uncomfortable with how casually white sage has become part of modern spiritual practice. For many Indigenous cultures, it isn't simply a nice spiritual tool—it's part of sacred traditions and ceremonies. I think it's important we acknowledge and respect that, rather than treating it as another trend we can borrow without understanding its origins.
That said, I also recognise that many people use sage with genuine respect and positive intention.
Do I think sage works?
Yes.
But not because I believe the smoke itself is magical (although I believe it has been proven to reduce bacteria).
I think it works because of what it represents.
It marks a moment.
It focuses our intention.
It encourages us to pause and consciously choose the energy we want to create.
If burning sage helps you do that, wonderful.
If it doesn't feel right for you, that's wonderful too.
Light a candle.
Open the windows.
Play music.
Sit quietly for five minutes.
Say a prayer.
Whatever helps you intentionally shift the atmosphere of your home has value.
For me, the power has never been in one particular tool.
It's always been in the intention behind using it.
Can you clear negative energy without sage?
Absolutely.
In fact, I think one of the most effective tools is something every one of us already has.
Our intention.
When we consciously decide that a space will feel lighter, calmer and more peaceful, we begin interacting with it differently.
We tidy.
We open windows.
We let light in.
We breathe more deeply.
We notice beauty again.
Sometimes what we're really clearing isn't the house.
It's ourselves.
What if your home still doesn't feel right?
Sometimes the answer isn't spiritual at all.
Perhaps your home is cluttered.
Perhaps it's become a dumping ground for things you no longer need.
Perhaps you've been so busy looking after everyone else that you've stopped looking after your own environment.
I've had days where simply cleaning my office completely changed how I felt about working in it.
Not because I'd removed a spirit.
Because I'd created space to think.
Energy and environment are deeply connected.
Clearing your own energy matters too
It's easy to focus on the house and forget about the person living in it.
If you've had a stressful week, your own energy deserves care too.
Go for a walk.
Take a shower.
Spend time in nature.
Meditate.
Journal.
Rest.
Sometimes the heaviness we're trying to clear from our homes is actually something we're carrying ourselves.
Do I believe houses can hold bad energy?
I believe houses can hold memories.
Atmosphere.
Emotion.
History.
But I don't automatically assume that means there's something sinister present.
Most homes simply reflect the lives being lived inside them.
When we consciously shift our own energy, our environment often changes with us.
Your home should feel like a safe place
Whether you choose to open the windows, light a candle, say a prayer, call on your angels or simply spend an afternoon decluttering, the goal is the same.
To create a space that feels peaceful.
Safe.
Welcoming.
A place where you can breathe.
I don't think clearing the energy in your home needs to be complicated.
I think it begins with one simple decision.
Choosing how you want your home to feel.
Everything else grows from there.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you clear the energy in your home?
My approach is intentionally simple. Open the windows and, if possible, the external doors. Then move through your home one room at a time, expanding your own energy into the space and setting a clear intention that anything no longer serving you leaves. I believe intention is one of the most powerful tools we have.
How often should you clear the energy in your home?
There isn't a rule. I tend to recommend clearing your home's energy after a particularly stressful period, following an argument, after guests have stayed, when moving into a new property or simply whenever your home feels heavy or stagnant. You don't need a reason beyond wanting your space to feel peaceful again.
Do I need sage to clear negative energy?
No. While many people enjoy using sage, I don't believe it's essential. If burning sage helps you focus your intention, then use it. If it doesn't resonate with you, don't feel you have to. Fresh air, intention and consciously changing the atmosphere of your home can be just as powerful.
Can crystals help clear the energy in a house?
Many people find comfort in using crystals as part of an energy-clearing practice. Personally, I see crystals as supportive tools rather than magical solutions. If they help you create a sense of calm and focus, they can absolutely become part of your ritual, but I don't believe they're a requirement.
Why does my house suddenly feel heavy?
There can be many reasons. Stress, grief, illness, emotional tension, clutter and major life changes can all affect how a home feels. Before assuming there's a spiritual cause, it's worth considering what has been happening in your life and whether your environment simply reflects the energy you've been living with recently.
Can negative energy stay in a house?
I believe homes can reflect the emotions and experiences of the people living in them. A house where there's been prolonged stress or sadness can certainly feel different to one filled with joy and laughter. The encouraging news is that the atmosphere of a home can change too, often through simple acts of intention, care and creating a calmer environment.
How can I make my home feel more peaceful?
Start with the practical. Open the windows, let in natural light, tidy the spaces you use most, play music you enjoy, light a candle if that feels meaningful and spend time creating an environment where you feel comfortable. Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference to the energy of a home.
Should I be worried if my home feels strange?
Not necessarily. Most of the time, there are far more ordinary explanations than extraordinary ones. Before jumping to the conclusion that something paranormal is happening, consider your own wellbeing, what's been happening in your life and whether your home simply needs a little care, attention and a fresh perspective.
Can I clear the energy in someone else's home?
You can certainly offer support if someone asks you to, but I believe it's important to respect people's boundaries and choices. In most cases, the person living in the home is the most important part of the process. Their intention, willingness and desire to create a peaceful environment are what make the greatest difference.
