Do You Really Need to See Your Spirit Guides?

One of the most common questions I get asked is:
"What do my spirit guides look like?"
Sometimes it's,
"I can sense them, but I can't see them."
Or,
"How do I know if I'm meeting my spirit guide?"
And occasionally,
"Why won't my spirit guide show themselves to me?"
I completely understand why people ask.
We're visual creatures. We like pictures. We like certainty. We like being able to describe what we're experiencing.
But after years of working with Spirit, I've come to a rather unexpected conclusion.
I don't think it matters what your spirit guides look like.
What do spirit guides actually look like?
The honest answer?
I don't know.
And I don't think anyone can say with certainty.
I believe Spirit are made of energy rather than physical matter. They aren't limited by bodies in the way we are.
When I connect with my own guides, I don't experience them as people standing in front of me wearing particular clothes or looking a certain way.
I experience them as intelligence.
Love.
Knowing.
Information.
It's much more like tuning into a radio station than meeting a person.
Why do we expect Spirit to look human?
This is the question I keep coming back to.
Many people who believe in spirit guides also believe in reincarnation.
If that's true, then your soul has lived many lives.
Different countries.
Different cultures.
Different genders.
Different ages.
Different appearances.
So which version would your soul choose?
The one from five hundred years ago?
The child?
The elderly woman?
The soldier?
The artist?
The parent?
The answer, for me, is...
None of them.
Because I don't think your soul is any one of those people.
I think it's all of them.
And more besides.
What if your spirit guide isn't separate from you?
Now here's where my perspective differs from many others.
I believe your greatest spirit guide is your own soul.
Not your personality.
Not your ego.
The deeper, wiser part of you that exists beyond this lifetime.
The part of you that remembers every experience.
Every lesson.
Every incarnation.
When I work with Spirit, it increasingly feels less like I'm speaking to individual personalities and more like I'm tuning into an incredible field of wisdom through my own soul.
That might sound strange.
But it's become one of the strongest experiences in my own mediumship.
Why can't I see my spirit guides?
Perhaps because seeing them isn't the goal.
I know that sounds almost disappointing.
But imagine becoming so focused on trying to see your guides that you miss everything they're trying to teach you.
I've watched people spend years trying to discover the name, appearance or identity of their spirit guide.
Meanwhile, they're overlooking the guidance arriving through intuition, synchronicities, feelings and quiet moments of knowing.
The guidance is already there.
They're just looking in the wrong direction.
How do spirit guides communicate?
In my experience, Spirit communicate in countless ways.
A sudden knowing.
A feeling that won't leave you.
An idea that seems to arrive from nowhere.
A repeated nudge towards the same decision.
A deep sense of peace.
An unexpected moment of clarity.
Sometimes those experiences are so ordinary that we dismiss them.
We're waiting for fireworks.
Spirit quietly hand us a torch.
Does it matter if you never see your spirit guide?
I honestly don't think so.
If someone offered me a choice between seeing my guides every day or understanding their guidance more clearly...
I'd choose the guidance every single time.
Because that's what transforms your life.
Not what they look like.
What they're helping you become.
Are we asking the wrong question?
Instead of asking,
"What does my spirit guide look like?"
Perhaps a more helpful question would be,
"What are they trying to teach me?"
That single shift changes everything.
Suddenly the focus moves away from curiosity...
...and towards growth.
Away from collecting spiritual experiences...
...and towards living a more conscious life.
Stop chasing the picture
I think we sometimes turn spirituality into a treasure hunt.
We want signs.
Visions.
Names.
Symbols.
Proof.
There's nothing wrong with any of those things.
But don't let them distract you from the quieter miracle.
The gentle guidance that's helping you become a kinder person.
A braver person.
A more authentic person.
Because that's what Spirit have always cared about in my experience.
Not whether you can describe them.
Whether you're willing to listen.
Your connection is already enough
If you've been worrying because you can't see your spirit guides...
Please don't.
Your connection isn't measured by visions.
It isn't measured by dramatic experiences.
It isn't measured by whether you know your guide's name or what colour robe they're wear.
It's measured by the relationship you're building.
The trust you're developing.
The wisdom you're learning to recognise.
The love you're allowing into your life.
And none of those things require perfect spiritual eyesight.
Sometimes the deepest connection isn't seeing more.
It's needing to see less.

This article is based on an episode of the Mediumship Matters podcast, where I answer questions from the Spirit Social community about spirit guides, mediumship and why I believe we've become a little too focused on what Spirit look like instead of what they're trying to teach us.

Deepening your connection with Spirit
If you're developing your intuition or mediumship, remember this:
Your goal isn't to collect impressive spiritual experiences.
Your goal is to build a relationship with Spirit that's rooted in trust, curiosity and love.
Everything else grows from there.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do spirit guides look like?
The honest answer is that nobody can say for certain. Some people experience their spirit guides as human figures, while others sense them as light, energy, feelings or simply an inner knowing. In my experience, what they look like is far less important than the guidance they're offering.
Why can't I see my spirit guides?
Not being able to see your spirit guides doesn't mean your connection is weak. Spirit communicate in many different ways, including thoughts, feelings, intuition, synchronicities and gentle nudges. Visual experiences are only one way of perceiving Spirit, and many people never experience them at all.
Do I need to know my spirit guide's name?
No. While some people receive names during meditation or spiritual practice, I don't believe knowing a guide's name is essential for building a meaningful relationship with Spirit. Focus on the quality of the guidance rather than collecting details about the guide themselves.
How do spirit guides communicate?
Spirit guides often communicate through intuition, inspiration, repeated ideas, dreams, symbols and a deep sense of knowing. Sometimes their guidance feels so natural that we mistake it for our own thoughts. Learning to trust those quieter experiences can be more valuable than waiting for dramatic spiritual encounters.
Are spirit guides real people?
Different spiritual traditions answer this question in different ways. My own belief is that our greatest spirit guide is our own soul. Rather than seeing guides as separate personalities, I experience them as an expression of the greater wisdom that exists beyond our current lifetime and as a doorway into the intelligence of Spirit.
Can everyone connect with their spirit guides?
I believe everyone has the ability to develop a relationship with Spirit. Like any relationship, it grows through time, trust and practice. You don't need special gifts or dramatic experiences to begin listening to your intuition and becoming more aware of spiritual guidance.
Is seeing spirit guides a sign of spiritual advancement?
Not necessarily. Some people naturally receive visual impressions, while others experience Spirit through feelings, knowing or hearing. One way isn't better than another. Your spiritual development isn't measured by how spectacular your experiences are but by how deeply you learn, grow and trust yourself.
What if I never see my spirit guides?
That's completely okay. A meaningful connection with Spirit doesn't depend on seeing images or visions. If you're becoming kinder, more self-aware, more compassionate and more aligned with your values, then you're already responding to spiritual guidance, whether you've ever seen a guide or not.
Should I focus on seeing my spirit guides or listening to them?
Personally, I'd always choose listening. It's easy to become fascinated by appearances, names and visual experiences, but the real purpose of working with Spirit is guidance, growth and understanding. The wisdom they share will always have a greater impact on your life than knowing what they look like.
