Do We Have Gender in the Spirit World?

When I'm demonstrating mediumship, one of the first things I'll often say is "I've got a gentleman in Spirit," or "I've got a grandmother stepping forward." It's one of the quickest ways to help someone recognise who I'm connecting with.

But over the years I've been asked a question that stops me in my tracks every time: do we actually have gender in the Spirit world? The honest answer is I don't think we do, at least not in the way we understand it here on Earth.

Do souls have a gender?

Personally, I don't believe souls are male or female. I think gender is part of our human experience, one of the many ways we experience life during an incarnation, but I don't believe it defines who we are at a soul level.

That doesn't mean gender isn't deeply important while we're here. Of course it is. Our identities, relationships and lived experiences matter enormously. I simply don't think they're the whole story of who we are.

Why do mediums describe spirits as men or women?

This is where evidential mediumship becomes really interesting, because the purpose of a medium isn't simply to connect with Spirit. It's to provide evidence that the Spirit communicator is recognisable to the person receiving the reading.

Imagine trying to work a demonstration if I stood up and said, "I've got an incredible ball of loving energy here." Lovely, but not particularly helpful. Instead, Spirit seem to present themselves in ways that make them recognisable: a grandfather, a sister, a husband, a friend. It's a little like playing a giant game of Guess Who. The quicker we can identify who the communicator is, the sooner we can move into the heart of the message.

Why do Spirit appear as people?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about mediumship. I don't believe Spirit are walking around looking exactly as they did on Earth. I think they're far more expansive than that. But when they communicate with a medium, they seem to present themselves in a way our human minds can understand.

If your grandmother came through as pure consciousness or a shimmering field of light, how would I know it was your grandmother? How would you? So Spirit, in their intelligence, meet us where we are. They offer the information we need to recognise them.

What about age in the Spirit world?

Gender isn't the only thing that raises questions. Age does too. If someone dies at ninety, are they ninety forever? If their partner died twenty years earlier, do they appear twenty years younger?

Personally, I don't think Heaven is filled with people slowly getting older. That doesn't make sense to me. Instead, I think Spirit present themselves at an age that feels recognisable and meaningful. Sometimes that's the person in their prime. Sometimes it's exactly as the sitter remembers them. Again, I think it's less about what Spirit are and more about how they choose to communicate with us.

What about transgender and non-binary people?

This is a question I find both important and fascinating. As our understanding of gender continues to grow, I believe our understanding of mediumship will grow alongside it.

If someone was transgender, I would expect Spirit to present them in a way that reflects who they truly are, not simply how others expected them to be. If someone identifies as non-binary, I think we have an opportunity to learn something beautiful about how Spirit communicate beyond the labels we've traditionally relied upon.

"The truth is, we're still learning. Rather than pretending I already have every answer, I'd much rather remain open and curious. That's how mediumship evolves." — Hannah Macintyre

Our humanity shapes mediumship

One thing I always try to remember is that mediumship doesn't happen in a vacuum. It happens through a human being. That means every medium works through their own language, experiences, culture and understanding of the world. We're constantly interpreting something that is, by its very nature, much bigger than words. That's why mediumship is always an unfolding. As humanity grows and changes, our understanding of Spirit grows too.

Spirit care more about connection than labels

One thing I do feel confident about is this: every meaningful connection I've had with Spirit has been rooted in love. Not judgement, not exclusion. Love. The Spirit world has never made me feel that labels are more important than connection. Instead, the overwhelming impression is always one of recognition, of being known, of being understood, of being loved exactly as you are.

We may never have every answer

I think it's healthy to admit that. There are things I believe because they've been consistently reflected in my work. There are things I suspect. And there are things I simply don't know. This is one of them.

Do souls have gender? My feeling is no. Do Spirit sometimes present with gender during mediumship? Absolutely. Because mediumship isn't just about what Spirit are. It's about finding a way for two worlds to recognise each other. And perhaps that's the most extraordinary part of all. Spirit don't ask us to understand everything about them. They simply ask us to recognise the love that still exists between us.

Key Takeaways

  • Gender belongs to the human experience, not the soul itself.

  • Spirit present as recognisable people (a grandfather, a sister, a friend) so evidence can land, not because that's literally what they look like.

  • Age in Spirit works the same way: they present at whatever age feels most meaningful and recognisable to the sitter.

  • For transgender and non-binary communicators, Spirit would be expected to present as who that person truly is, not who others expected them to be.

  • Mediumship is always filtered through a human being, so it evolves as our collective understanding does.

  • What matters most to Spirit isn't the label. It's the connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do souls have a gender in the Spirit world?

I don't believe so, no. Gender feels like part of our human experience rather than something that defines us at a soul level. It matters enormously while we're here, but I don't think it's the whole story of who we are.

Why do mediums say things like "I have a grandmother" or "a gentleman in Spirit"?

Because evidential mediumship is about recognition. Spirit seem to present themselves in ways the sitter can identify, a grandfather, a sister, a friend, so we can move quickly into the heart of the message rather than staying stuck describing vague energy.

Do Spirit really look like people, or is that just for our benefit?

I think it's for our benefit. Spirit are far more expansive than a fixed human form, but when they communicate, they meet us where we are and present themselves in a way we can understand and recognise.

Does someone appear at the age they died, or younger?

In my experience, Spirit present at whatever age feels most meaningful and recognisable to the person receiving the reading, often in their prime, sometimes exactly as the sitter remembers them. It's less about a fixed age and more about connection.

How does this apply to transgender or non-binary people in Spirit?

I would expect Spirit to present someone as who they truly are, not as others expected them to be. It's an area I hold with curiosity rather than certainty, because our collective understanding is still growing, and I think mediumship grows alongside it.
