Developing Mediumship: Why Mentorship and Training Matter

One of the biggest myths about mediumship is that if you’re “gifted,” you don’t need training. Spirit just hands you a golden ticket, and suddenly you’re delivering messages like some kind of supernatural Amazon Prime service.
Wrong.
Mediumship, like any skill, requires development, practice, and a solid foundation. And while Spirit may be whispering in your ear, they’re not necessarily handing out step-by-step instructions on how to do it right.
That’s where mentorship and training come in.
No matter how long you’ve been doing this work, you never stop learning. I’m still training, still pushing myself, still sitting in circles, and still having those humbling moments where Spirit reminds me that I don’t know it all (and probably never will).
So, let’s talk about why training matters, what makes a good mentor, and why going solo will only take you so far.
1. Natural Ability is Great… But Training Takes You Further
Yes, some people are naturally more sensitive to Spirit. But that doesn’t mean they automatically know how to work with the energy, interpret evidence, or deliver a clear and powerful reading.
When I started, I was entirely self-taught—learning through trial and error, online courses, and practice. And for a while, I thought I was doing just fine. But then I trained with experienced mentors, and guess what?
💡 I realized I was over-explaining rather than just delivering the evidence.💡 I was controlling the process instead of letting Spirit take the lead.💡 I was missing out on the depth of communication that real surrender brings.
That’s the difference between dabbling in mediumship and mastering it.
And let’s be honest—how often do we think we’re doing something right, only to have someone point out that we’ve been doing it completely backwards? (Like realizing you’ve been pronouncing quinoa wrong for years. Just me? Okay then.)
2. A Good Mentor Pushes You Out of Your Comfort Zone
The best mentors aren’t just there to tell you how fabulous you are. They push you, challenge you, and make you confront your weak spots.
I’ve had mentors who made me throw out my “safe” way of working and try something completely new—whether that was shifting my focus to clairsentience, expanding the depth of my evidence, or gasp working without structure and trusting Spirit to take the lead.
Was it uncomfortable? Yes. Did I resist at first? Absolutely. Did it make me a better medium? Without a doubt.
The right mentor doesn’t just teach you techniques; they change the way you experience mediumship. They help you break old habits, refine your abilities, and discover strengths you didn’t even know you had.
3. Mediumship Training Prevents “Bad Habits” From Sticking
One of the biggest dangers of developing mediumship without guidance is that you might be reinforcing bad habits without even realizing it.
For example:
🙅♀️ Over-explaining instead of letting the evidence stand on its own.🙅♀️ Interpreting too much instead of delivering exactly what you receive.🙅♀️ Forcing the connection instead of allowing Spirit to work their way.
You need someone to catch those unconscious habits and fine-tune your readings. Without that, you’re just guessing your way through development.
It’s like driving a car with no formal lessons—you might figure it out, but you’re probably picking up a whole lot of bad habits that a professional instructor would have fixed in the first five minutes.
4. Training Gives You a Support Network
Developing mediumship can be a lonely path. Your family might be supportive, but they’re probably not going to be thrilled when you ask them to sit still while you stare at their aura.
That’s why training in groups—whether in circles, workshops, or mentorship programs—is so important.
When you train with others, you get:
✔️ A safe space to make mistakes and grow.✔️ Feedback from people who are on the same journey as you.✔️ The chance to witness different styles of mediumship and expand your understanding.✔️ Friends who actually get it when you say, “I had the weirdest experience with Spirit today.”
One of the biggest benefits of working with other students is seeing that you’re not alone in the struggles of development. Mediumship isn’t always smooth sailing, and having a supportive group of fellow learners makes the journey so much easier.
5. Training Takes You from Good to Exceptional
I was already working as a medium before I sought out structured training. But once I did?
💡 My confidence grew.💡 My connections became stronger.💡 My accuracy improved.
It’s like any skill—you can teach yourself to play the piano by ear, but if you train with a master, you’ll reach levels you never could alone.
So, How Do You Find the Right Mentor?
Not all training is created equal. Here’s what to look for in a great mediumship mentor:
✔️ Experience & Reputation – Have they demonstrated their skills? Do they have a solid reputation in the field?✔️ A Teaching Style That Resonates – Some teachers are gentle. Some are tough. Find someone who challenges you without breaking you.✔️ A Focus on Evidence-Based Mediumship – You want someone who will push you to deliver real, specific, undeniable evidence—not just vague, fluffy messages.✔️ Encouragement & Constructive Feedback – You need a mentor who believes in you but won’t let you get away with sloppy work.✔️ A Supportive Learning Environment – Whether in-person or online, you should feel safe to make mistakes and grow.
