Developing your mediumship can be an exciting, rewarding, and deeply meaningful journey. But let’s be honest—it’s also frustrating, confusing, and at times, downright discouraging. If you’ve ever found yourself questioning your abilities, wondering if you’re making it all up, or feeling like you’re getting nowhere, you’re not alone.
I see the same struggles crop up again and again for developing mediums, and the good news? They’re completely normal. In fact, they’re a sign that you’re growing. So let’s talk about the five biggest challenges that mediums-in-training face—and why they don’t mean you should give up.
1. Self-Doubt: Am I Just Making This Up?
This is hands down the most common problem. Every developing medium, no matter how experienced they become, has asked themselves:
Is this real?
Am I imagining it?
What if I’m just saying what I want to hear?
Here’s the truth—spirit communication is often subtle. It’s not like the movies, where spirits waltz in, introduce themselves, and tell you their life story in perfect clarity. Instead, messages come through in fleeting impressions, feelings, words, and images—so subtle that they can feel like your own thoughts.
The key is learning to trust the first thing that comes in and resist the urge to second-guess it. The more you work with it, the stronger and clearer it becomes.
You’re not making it up—you’re just not used to trusting your intuition yet.
2. One Day It Works, The Next It Doesn’t
One day, you feel completely connected—evidence is flowing, messages are spot on, and you think, Yes! I’ve cracked it! The next day? Silence. Nothing. Tumbleweeds.
This rollercoaster is totally normal. Mediumship is an energetic process, and your energy fluctuates daily. So many factors affect your connection—your mood, your stress levels, even what you ate that day!
The trick is not to panic when you have an “off” day. Instead of freaking out and thinking you’ve lost your ability forever (which you haven’t), treat it as part of the process. Keep showing up, keep practicing, and trust that the flow will return.
3. The Fear of Getting It Wrong
Most mediums hit a wall at some point where they become terrified of making mistakes. Maybe you’ve had a reading where nothing seemed to land. Maybe you’re afraid of looking stupid.
But here’s something I always tell my students:
➡️ Every medium gets things wrong. Even the best, most experienced mediums in the world misinterpret information sometimes.
Fear of failure holds you back more than any actual mistake ever will. The only way to grow is to keep going, even when you’re not 100% sure you’re right.
A great way to move past this is to practice in safe environments, like a spiritual development circle or a structured practice session with real sitters—where you’re supported and encouraged, rather than judged.
4. Struggling to Get Good Evidence
A vague message like “I have a grandmother here, she loves you” isn’t evidential mediumship. Anyone can say that. True evidential mediumship means giving clear, specific details—names, memories, habits, dates, personality traits.
But pushing for better evidence takes practice. If you’re struggling to get specific details, ask yourself:
Am I settling for the first thing I get, or am I asking spirit to give me more?
Am I afraid to say what I’m getting in case it’s wrong?
Am I trusting myself, or overthinking?
One of the best ways to improve your evidence is to work with real sitters and receive constructive feedback—which is exactly what I focus on in my training courses and mentorship sessions.
5. Feeling Like You're Not ‘Special’ Enough
A lot of mediums struggle with the belief that they’re not gifted enough, not spiritual enough, or that they don’t have a special calling.
Let me be clear:
➡️ You don’t need a divine calling to be a medium.
➡️ You don’t need to be a certain type of person.
➡️ You don’t need to have had a near-death experience or a lifelong connection to spirit.
Mediumship is a natural ability—one that you already have. The only difference between someone who develops it and someone who doesn’t? Practice, trust, and dedication.
If you feel drawn to this work, that’s enough. You don’t need anyone’s permission to develop your connection with spirit.
Final Thoughts: Keep Going!
Every single medium goes through these struggles. They are not signs that you should quit. They are signs that you are learning, stretching, and growing.
