Common Mediumship Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Mediumship is a lifelong journey of learning, growing, and—let’s be honest—making a few mistakes along the way. If you’ve ever walked away from a reading wondering if you just made it all up, you’re not alone! Every medium, no matter how experienced, has had moments of doubt, misinterpretation, or complete brain fog.

But the good news? Many of these mistakes are fixable once you recognize them. So, let’s dive into some of the most common mediumship mistakes and, more importantly, how to avoid them.

1. Overthinking the Evidence

The Mistake:

You receive a piece of information—let’s say you see a red rose—and instead of delivering it as it is, you start analysing it. Is this person named Rose? Does it mean love? Is it about Valentine’s Day? Before you know it, you’re tangled in your own thoughts and Spirit’s like, “I just meant ‘rose’—why are you making this so complicated?”

How to Fix It:

  • Say exactly what you get. If Spirit shows you a rose, just say, “I see a rose.” Let the sitter validate it.

  • Don’t assume you know the meaning. Spirit’s symbols aren’t always what we expect.

  • Trust that simple is best.

2. Trying Too Hard to Impress

The Mistake:

You want to blow the sitter’s mind. So, instead of letting the evidence flow, you push for dramatic details. You want a full name, a job title, and their favorite childhood pet—but Spirit gives you a blue bicycle. Suddenly, you feel like you’re failing.

How to Fix It:

  • Stop forcing it. Spirit will give you what’s important, not what you think is impressive.

  • Work with what comes naturally. A small piece of evidence can be more powerful than a long, overworked description.

  • Remember: mediumship is about connection, not performance.

3. Not Sitting in the Power Enough

The Mistake:

You expect your mediumship to work like a tap—you turn it on when needed and expect instant results. But if you’re not regularly sitting in the power, your link can feel weak, unreliable, and inconsistent.

How to Fix It:

  • Make sitting in the power a habit. Even 10 minutes a day can transform your connection.

  • Understand that Spirit communication is about energy. The more you build your power, the stronger your link will be.

  • Consistency is key.

4. Mixing Psychic and Mediumship Work

The Mistake:

You’re delivering a reading, and suddenly you find yourself giving life advice rather than evidence from Spirit. This happens when you slip from mediumship (communicating with Spirit) into psychic work (reading the sitter’s energy).

How to Fix It:

  • Set your intention before you start. Are you working psychically or mediumistically?

  • If it’s a mediumship reading, focus on Spirit. If you’re getting more about the sitter than the communicator, you’ve likely shifted into psychic mode.

  • Be mindful of the difference. Both are valuable, but they are not the same.

5. Filling in the Gaps

The Mistake:

You get a strong image of a man in a military uniform, but instead of delivering that, you start guessing. Maybe he was in the army? Maybe he fought in World War II? Suddenly, you’ve gone from delivering clear evidence to playing a guessing game.

How to Fix It:

  • Stick to what you get. If you see a military uniform, say exactly that—nothing more, nothing less.

  • Let the sitter do the validating. They will recognize the evidence if it’s correct.

  • Avoid assumptions.

6. Doubting Yourself

The Mistake:

You get a piece of evidence but hesitate to say it because it sounds too random or silly. Then, you keep it to yourself—only for the sitter to later mention that exact detail unprompted!

How to Fix It:

  • Say everything. Spirit doesn’t waste energy sending meaningless details.

  • Trust that Spirit knows what they’re doing. Even if it makes no sense to you, it could be incredibly meaningful to the sitter.

  • Confidence grows with practice. Keep going.

7. Ignoring the Emotional Connection

The Mistake:

You deliver evidence—names, dates, locations—but forget about the emotion behind it. The reading feels like a history lesson rather than a heartfelt reunion.

How to Fix It:

  • Blend with Spirit. Feel their presence, their love, their personality.

  • Describe their essence. Were they warm, funny, strict, playful?

  • A great mediumship reading isn’t just about evidence—it’s about healing.

8. Relying Too Much on One Clair

The Mistake:

You’re clairsentient (you feel Spirit’s energy), but instead of developing your other senses, you rely on just that one skill. Your readings feel one-dimensional because you’re missing out on other ways Spirit communicates.

How to Fix It:

  • Expand your senses. Work on clairvoyance (seeing), clairaudience (hearing), and claircognizance (knowing) as well.

  • Experiment. Try sitting in the power with the intention of developing a different clair each time.

  • Spirit will communicate in the way you’re most open to—but don’t limit yourself.

Final Thoughts: Mediumship is a Journey

Mistakes in mediumship aren’t failures—they’re lessons. Every misstep is an opportunity to refine your connection, build your confidence, and grow into a stronger medium.

So, don’t be too hard on yourself. Keep practicing, keep sitting in the power, and most importantly—trust Spirit.
