Mediumship Matters Podcast — Season 1, Episode 12

One of the most common questions people ask at the beginning of mediumship development is deceptively simple: “How do I know if it’s spirit, or just my imagination?”
In this episode of Mediumship Matters, I answer that question honestly — without shortcuts, certainty theatre, or spiritual bravado. We explore why doubt is inevitable, why mediumship is far more subtle than many people expect, and why honesty about what this work actually feels like is essential for healthy development.
This episode is especially relevant if you’ve ever felt unsure, broken, or “not gifted enough” because your experiences don’t match what you’ve been told mediumship should look like.
Why Doubt Is Part of Mediumship, Not a Failure
One of the first things I share in this episode is something many people are relieved to hear:even experienced mediums don’t always know with absolute certainty.
Mediumship doesn’t come with flashing lights or constant physical sensations. Most of the time, it feels subtle, quiet, and easy to dismiss. Doubt isn’t a sign you’re failing — it’s a natural part of learning to trust information that arrives gently rather than forcefully.
Confidence in mediumship grows through experience, not through eliminating doubt.
Spirit Is Closer Than We’ve Been Taught to Believe
In this episode, I share my understanding of the spirit world as something interwoven with our reality, rather than distant or separate.
Spirit doesn’t go “somewhere else” and watch us from afar. Loved ones remain close, but our human nervous system and consciousness aren’t designed to perceive them constantly. If we could feel spirit as vividly as physical presence, it would overwhelm us.
Subtlety is not a limitation — it’s protection.
Why Working With Other People Changes Everything
One of the most important turning points in development comes when you begin working with others.
When you receive information you couldn’t possibly know — and it lands clearly and accurately — something shifts. Until that point, it’s very hard to separate imagination from intuition or spirit communication.
There is no shortcut around this stage. Practice is what builds discernment.
The Myth of the “Gifted Few”
This episode also revisits a topic I feel very strongly about: the idea that mediumship is a special gift bestowed on a chosen few.
I don’t believe that.
While mediumship is a gift in the sense that it can profoundly change lives, it doesn’t belong to one person more than another. Everyone has the capacity to connect. Some people may be more attuned in certain ways, but that doesn’t make them more spiritual or more special.
Language around “gifts” is often used to create hierarchy — and sometimes to manipulate admiration or dependence.
Seeing and Hearing Spirit: Clearing Up the Confusion
A major source of disillusionment for beginners is the idea that mediums physically see and hear spirit in the same way they see and hear people.
For most mediums, this isn’t the case.
Seeing usually happens in the mind’s eye. Hearing is often experienced as your own inner voice, carrying information that doesn’t feel consciously constructed. When this isn’t explained clearly, people assume they’re failing — when in reality, their experiences are completely normal.
Honest teaching matters.
Judgement, Compassion, and Human Filters
The latter part of this episode explores judgement — both of others and ourselves.
We all interpret experiences through personal filters shaped by stress, fear, trauma, and circumstance. Two people can experience the same event and hold entirely different truths without either being intentionally dishonest.
Learning to hold compassion — for ourselves and others — is part of spiritual maturity. Mediumship doesn’t remove our humanity. It deepens our responsibility to live it consciously.
