The Power of Surrender in Mediumship: Trusting Spirit for Stronger Connections

Mediumship is a funny old thing. One minute, you’re blending beautifully, feeling the presence of Spirit, delivering messages like some kind of cosmic radio host. The next? You’re sweating bullets, getting nothing, and wondering if Spirit has decided to ghost you (pun fully intended).

But here’s the thing—when mediumship isn’t flowing, it’s usually not because Spirit isn’t there. It’s because we’re trying too hard. We’re gripping, overthinking, demanding that Spirit communicates in a certain way. And do you know what happens when we do that? We block the flow.

I had an incredible chat with Reverend Lori Sheridan, a spiritual medium and minister, about this very topic. And if there’s one thing we both agree on, it’s this: mediumship only truly works when you surrender.

So, let’s talk about why surrender is so hard, why it’s so necessary, and how you can trust Spirit more to build stronger connections.

Surrender: The Key to Mediumship Growth

If you’ve ever sat in development circles, you’ve probably heard this advice a hundred times:"Just surrender. Let go. Trust Spirit."

Great. Thanks for that. But what does surrender actually mean? Because in practice, it’s about as easy as meditating when your brain is reminding you about the laundry, that awkward thing you said in 2014, and whether or not you locked the front door.

Lori summed it up beautifully when she shared her own breakthrough moment:

“I was really trying to control the way I received information, and when I began to surrender and just allow the Spirit World to communicate how they wanted to, that was the big leap.”

In other words, surrender is about letting Spirit take the lead. It’s about not forcing the details or trying to shape the message into what we think it should be. It’s about stepping back and allowing—and I know, for most of us, that’s easier said than done.

Why We Struggle to Let Go (AKA: The Control Problem)

Mediums (especially developing ones) often fall into the trap of trying too hard. We want to “get it right,” we want to give mind-blowing evidence, and we want our sitters to be happy. But guess what? The moment we start forcing it, we disconnect from the flow of Spirit.

I’ve seen it time and time again—people pushing for specific details, mentally interviewing Spirit, interrogating them like they’re on trial:

“Tell me your name, your job, how you died, your favourite colour, your WiFi password…”

And Spirit’s just standing there like, “Mate, if you’d just shush for a second, I was about to give you exactly what you needed.”

Lori put it perfectly:

“When there’s love, when there’s need, if we can just surrender, the power of the Spirit World is amazing. It’s not about us. It’s about them.”

That’s the golden rule right there. Surrender isn’t about giving up—it’s about allowing Spirit to work through us.

What Happens When You Truly Surrender?

Magic. That’s what happens.

Lori shared a profound experience where she finally let go and trusted Spirit to lead the session. She had donated a reading to a grieving family, and the pressure was on. But instead of panicking, she surrendered. And when she did?

💫 Spirit stepped in.💫 The evidence flowed.💫 The loved one took full control of the connection.💫 The healing was undeniable.

“It was one of those miracle moments. You could feel the healing in the room. And I realized: This is what happens when you truly surrender.”

We all want moments like that. But they don’t come from forcing Spirit to work in a particular way. They come from trusting Spirit to guide the connection.

How to Surrender in Mediumship (Even When It’s Hard)

Let’s be honest—surrendering sounds great in theory, but in practice, it can be like trying to meditate while your neighbour blasts 90s dance hits through the wall.

So how do we actually do it?

1. Stop Controlling How Spirit Communicates

We all have our preferred way of working with Spirit, but sometimes they have other plans. If you’re waiting for names and instead you keep seeing an old rocking chair? Talk about the rocking chair. Trust that Spirit knows what they’re doing.

2. Allow the Evidence to Unfold

Mediumship isn’t a checklist. Some of the most powerful evidence comes when you just say what you get—without filtering, judging, or second-guessing.

3. Embrace the Silence

Silence doesn’t mean Spirit isn’t there. Sometimes, they need a moment to bring forward a memory or piece of evidence. Trust the pause.

4. Accept That You’ll Get It Wrong Sometimes

I know. Horrifying, right? But here’s the thing: even the best mediums have off days. Lori and I both agree—mediumship is a learning process. Getting it “wrong” is part of getting better.

5. Sit in the Power

I know, I know—sitting in the power sounds like spiritual homework. But regularly sitting in the presence of Spirit without expectation or agenda strengthens your connection. And the stronger your connection, the easier surrender becomes.

Final Thoughts: Let Spirit Lead

Mediumship isn’t about us. It’s about Spirit, the sitter, and the connection that happens in between.

When we let go, when we trust, when we truly surrender—that’s when the real magic happens.

So the next time you find yourself panicking mid-reading, take a deep breath and remember:

🕊 Surrender isn’t weakness—it’s power.🕊 Spirit knows what they’re doing.🕊 You’re not in control—and that’s a good thing.

Because when you let Spirit lead, they’ll take you exactly where you need to go.
