Mediumship Matters Podcast — Season 1, Episode 3

Fear around “dark energy” is one of the most common barriers people face when exploring spirituality or mediumship.
In this episode of Mediumship Matters, I respond to a listener question about frightening spiritual experiences and unpack what’s actually happening when people sense something heavy, uncomfortable, or unsettling. Rather than reinforcing fear-based explanations, this episode explores energy, trauma, expectation, and human interpretation — and why spirit itself is not something to be afraid of.
This episode is especially relevant if you’ve ever felt uneasy in a space, worried about negative energy, or wondered whether spiritual experiences can ever be unsafe.
Why Fear Shapes How We Interpret Spiritual Experiences
Many frightening spiritual experiences are not caused by the spirit world itself, but by how human beings interpret energy.
We filter what we sense through:
personal belief systems
cultural conditioning
religious upbringing
media and storytelling
fear of the unknown
When something feels unfamiliar or intense, the mind often reaches for the darkest possible explanation. That doesn’t make the experience imaginary — but it does shape how it’s perceived.
Trauma Can Leave Energetic Imprints
One of the key ideas explored in this episode is how trauma can create energetic imprints.
Experiences such as abuse, shock, grief, or fear can leave a residue in a person’s energy or in a physical space. Over time, if that energy is avoided, feared, or suppressed, it can feel heavier and more intense — almost as though it has a presence of its own.
This doesn’t mean there is a spirit attached, trapped, or haunting. It means the energy has not yet been integrated or acknowledged.
Why “Negative Spirits” Don’t Fit My Understanding
Through years of development, healing work, and reflection, my understanding of the spirit world has shifted.
I no longer believe in evil spirits or demonic entities. In my experience, spirit is intelligent, conscious, and rooted in light and love. People do not become trapped or punished after death, regardless of how they lived or passed.
What can feel dark or frightening is human-created energy — especially when fear feeds it.
How the Mind Interprets Energy
The brain plays a powerful role in spiritual perception.
When we sense something unfamiliar, the mind creates imagery to make sense of it. If we expect something spooky, the mind often supplies a spooky picture. This is not deception — it’s interpretation.
The imagery doesn’t define the energy. It reflects the lens through which it’s being perceived.
Spaces, Places, and Collective Energy
This episode also explores how places can feel heavy without being haunted.
When a location is associated with trauma, shock, or fear — and that story is repeatedly revisited — collective attention can reinforce the feeling of unease. Over time, people begin to expect something to be wrong there, which strengthens the energetic atmosphere.
This doesn’t mean spirit is trapped. It means energy has been repeatedly fed.
Spirit Communication Is Not About Fear
One of the most important points in this episode is this:
Spirit does not want to frighten us.
If spirit needs to get attention, it may influence the physical world in small ways — but fear is not the goal. When people ask for activity to stop, it usually does.
Fear-based narratives often persist because fear sells. But fear also blocks trust, grounding, and genuine connection.
